Good Neighbors Group has been a true blessing to our organization. Their Souper Bowl Food Drive, which is a friendly food drive competition between neighborhoods, has been a great help! The food that comes in during that drive helps fill our pantry shelves for many months of the year.

In addition, GNG does an excellent job at “helping the helpers”. In several cases they have helped us fill an important client need that falls just outside our work - helping in situations that don’t fit other organizations’ services.

They have also helped us spread our need and connect with others in the area.

I have shared occasional volunteer initiatives with Julie for over ten years…her ongoing and genuine commitment to improving the world around her in a number of different ways is most impressive…a very good neighbor indeed !!!

Most recently, I had an important need to donate several large furniture items as quickly as possible on a weekend…a quick call to Julie ( tapping into her network) promptly resulted in a lead and success in having these items picked up for a family in need…a valuable win/win outcome !!!

Good Neighbors Group is light in the neighborhood. Serving our environment by planting native plants and removing invasives through their Rogue Gardeners arm to to collecting and recycling the non recyclable,, for example styrofoam. GNG also created Souper Bowl to fill our local food pantries by getting neighborhoods into a friendly competition to collect the most food GNG raises awareness and involvement showing the way to be a good neighbor. GNG at its heart is a great connector, bringing neighbors and services together for all of us.

The very first time I heard about Good Neighbors Group, I was amazed at how closely its mission aligned with my own personal values. This is a group that cares not only about its fellow human beings, but also about the Earth which we all inhabit. Bravo GNG!

Good Neighbors Group is an organization committed to helping those in need both locally and even internationally. They have helped me understand my own ecological impact and have modeled for me how to take care of a community and bring them together. What a great resource for everyone! They speak volumes to me because they lead with their action always trying to go above and beyond for every interaction and experience. If you need help, they will connect you with the best organizations and people available to solve your problem.

Good neighbors group helped me get back on my feet after a difficult divorce and emergency custody situation. It was invaluable to have not only the logistical and financial support but also just a person who was in my corner to talk to. I hope one day I'll be in the position to give back.

I had the pleasure of being introduced to Julie Shay from a mutual friend and I was immediately drawn to her energy and commitment to being a good neighbor locally as well as globally. We both share a mutual desire to make this world a better place for our community as well as our neighbors around the globe.

I continue to be in awe of her endless ideas to care for our planet and the people who live on it. She inspires everyone she meets to do their part and to get involved. I am a better person for meeting her and for having the privilege of working with her and sharing ideas.

I have personally known Julie Shay for over 2 decades, and was thrilled when she (co)founded Good Neighbors Group: it has given me so many ways to help my community and give back (it helps that I am her Mom’s neighbor!). From the beginnings of the annual Earth Day Festival at Severna Park Middle School, to February’s S(o)uper Bowl Food Drives, I am continually amazed ~ thanks in no small part to Julie’s boundless energy and incredible talent for forging partnerships ~ by how GNG’s mission has evolved and expanded in both breadth and scope. She is the hub of an ever-growing network of like-minded individuals, non-profits and companies to serve a wide range of community needs. Julie’s creativity and ingenuity are evident in the many other events and initiatives, including blood drives, Help the Helpers, and Rogue Gardeners. She is a vital resource to connect volunteers with ways to help both people and the planet. While focused locally in Anne Arundel County, GNG’s outreach has for years been important to Guatemala-based Buenos Vecinos/Central America, and, more recently, has begun to offer aid to Kenya. I am honored to be a part of her network.

Our small garden club received a sizable grant to plant a 1,400 square-foot native tree and shrub garden at a church where we meet. First, we had the daunting task of removing non-native, invasive groundcovers and landscape fabric buried six-inches below the soil. The beds were also filled with large roots from trees and shrubs that had been removed. A big job, indeed!

We could not have accomplished this arduous task without the help of the Good Neighbors Group volunteers. They worked very hard with garden club members over two months (in the summer heat) to prepare the garden beds and subsequently spread compost, plant 70 native trees and shrubs, and top the entire garden with mulch.

The resulting garden is beautiful and provides habitat and food for native wildlife and pollinators. The partnership with the Good Neighbors Group made this magnificent garden a reality. The organization is such a valuable resource in the community and is truly a heartwarming example of neighbors helping neighbors. Thank you Good Neighbors Group!
