Autism International also known as AutismOne is all about hope and providing new possibilities for our children and their families. AutismOne is the place ideas come together. Each year, this nonprofit puts together an incredible five-day conference. It is an inimitable venue where the latest innovations are discussed, and collaboration is nurtured. Parents learn from parents; parents and professionals learn from each other; and professionals share ideas that will help more children reach their full potential.

The reason AutismOne is my nonprofit of choice is because everything they do directly benefits the children, our families, and our community. They are a lean organization with unusually low administrative costs. Everyone comes together at AutismOne and on a shoestring budget, this conference changes lives. It is the largest, most comprehensive annual autism conference, with well over a hundred distinguished speakers from all over the world.

Each speaker, doctor, and researcher who presents are videotaped. AutismOne has made thousands of conference videos available free to the public for years. The information presented in the videos is documented and shared worldwide with parents, physicians, researchers, and professionals in the field. That way those unable to attend can still learn about the latest science, interventions, and cutting edge treatments.

Keynote speakers have been such luminaries as Robert Kennedy Jr.; Nobel Prize-winning researcher Prof. Luc Montagnier, and Rep. Darrell Issa, the former chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. They do not believe autism is a gift but understand our children are the only gift. They understand our children have immune systems that are not functioning properly and that they need and deserve proper medical treatment.

The AutismOne think tanks that meet at the conference have facilitated publications in scientific journals! The continuing medical education program teaches our practitioners about cutting-edge treatments, new diagnostic techniques, and a comprehensive approach in the medical evaluation of autism spectrum disorders.

I want to share with you that the track of the conference that is specifically designed to address the needs of our newly diagnosed and overwhelmed families is the one that is dearest to my heart. I have felt the isolation that comes with living on Autism Island, and I don’t want anyone to ever feel that alone again. Please hit the donate button so this remarkable organization can continue to help our children reach their full potential. There is no other organization I endorse as much as this one.
My name is Mayra Austin, CEO and Founder of MLC From The Heart, and this is #mygivingstory. A few years back, I found myself in a predicament. I had made (what I thought) was an intelligent career move to join a franchisor with a very promising business model.

It turned out this would be one of my most significant life lessons on how not to treat people, how positional leadership can impact a strong business model, and how to follow your sense of purpose, because it is a gift.

The workforce culture I found myself in was completely toxic. There was NO professional or personal growth taking place there.

It was what John Maxwell refers to as a dividing culture:

'Dividers seek to make themselves look or feel better by making others feel worse. They damage relationships, fracture teams and organizations, and create havoc in people's lives.'

I found myself greatly disappointed, anxious and honestly feeling oppressed by a top down system that was role driven versus value driven.

I kept thinking over and over again about what to do, had sleepless nights and was completely miserable.

Suddenly after much prayer and thinking, I came to the realization that I had the power to change my path and create something meaningful with this experience. I could create something for others not to feel the way I did in that moment. I knew in that moment, that my lifelong experiences and struggles were meant for something.

I called upon 2 long time friends. I was nervous, but excited. This made the vision real.

I did it! I said the words out loud to them:

'I want to start a nonprofit organization that helps people succeed in the workforce and gets them to where they want to go, do you want to be a part of it?'

Their answer was a resounding yes and that was the beginning of this amazing journey.

We formed MLC From The Heart, a nonprofit organization that helps people in the community become professionally and personally developed to reach their goals and reach sustainability in the workforce.

The rest of my journey, however, was nowhere near complete. This was just the beginning.

To this day I cannot believe the obstacles I have personally and professionally overcome as the MLC From The Heart story unfolded.

While MLC From The Heart was growing, I decided that the toxic environment I was in would not serve my God given purpose to drive change. I made a decision, after much turmoil, to resign my position with my employer and move on to uncharted waters. I did this because I refused to compromise who I was and who I was called to be.

Before and after making this difficult decision, came much heart ache, anxiety and character building.

During this process both my grandmothers passed months apart from each other, I was diagnosed with a condition called Trigeminal Neuralgia, was unemployed, and was in a car accident.

As we all know: When it rains, it pours!

The next few months were difficult, EXTreMELY difficult, but MLC From The Heart kept growing and impacting the community positively.

I share this very personal experience, because I know there are others out there who are experiencing hardship.

I first met Ben Odipo shortly after my wife, Kaye ,met him in the school district where they worked together. I was impressed with his character right away. Self assured and eager to talk about the village of Yimbo, where he spent part of his life. He talked about his family, and his father's dream to get a school started in the village. No doubt about his father's impact in the village, and his love for education, which has been passed down to his children (read the bios about them).
Before long, plans were made to build a library at the Maguna Primary School. Fund raising, such a "Pennies for Yimbo" at the school where my wife worked, and other donations soon assured that the library would be built. I, along with my wife and several others, were able to attend the dedication in July of 2009. What an absolute thrill to be part of that experience, and to witness the power and importance of education in the village. The excitement of the children and adults at the prospect of having learning and reading materials at their disposal was a gift to see.
I am excited to see the progress towards water being accessible to the school children and people of Yimbo. What a tremendous gift to have clean water to drink (see some of the photos of the children , and to aid in much needed and improved sanitation for them. Lives will be changed forever, and that is what life is all about. And it is easy to see how important it is to the Odipo family to have created "Friends of Yimbo", to get the much needed changes and enrich the lives of those living there.
