I first met Ben Odipo shortly after my wife, Kaye ,met him in the school district where they worked together. I was impressed with his character right away. Self assured and eager to talk about the village of Yimbo, where he spent part of his life. He talked about his family, and his father's dream to get a school started in the village. No doubt about his father's impact in the village, and his love for education, which has been passed down to his children (read the bios about them).
Before long, plans were made to build a library at the Maguna Primary School. Fund raising, such a "Pennies for Yimbo" at the school where my wife worked, and other donations soon assured that the library would be built. I, along with my wife and several others, were able to attend the dedication in July of 2009. What an absolute thrill to be part of that experience, and to witness the power and importance of education in the village. The excitement of the children and adults at the prospect of having learning and reading materials at their disposal was a gift to see.
I am excited to see the progress towards water being accessible to the school children and people of Yimbo. What a tremendous gift to have clean water to drink (see some of the photos of the children , and to aid in much needed and improved sanitation for them. Lives will be changed forever, and that is what life is all about. And it is easy to see how important it is to the Odipo family to have created "Friends of Yimbo", to get the much needed changes and enrich the lives of those living there.
