I have been a member of Band of the Hills from the first month of rehearsals 26+ years ago as it has grown from 25 players to over 100. I also play in the Band of the Hills Clarinet Choir which is a much smaller ensemble performing in a wider variety of venues.

The joy of making music with a community of like-minded folks of all ages would be hard to surpass. As a semi-retired engineer, the aesthetic, social, and cognitive are valuable to me. We know the greater Leander-Cedar Park-Austin community enjoys our performances and benefits from the presentation of a different kind of "live music" as well.

I have played clarinet with Band of the Hills during their entire 25 season history. The band provides many benefits to both it's members and the community.

The band performs seasonal music at civic events (Christmas Festivals or Library fund raisers) and presents community concerts through out the year. Sub-units of the band, such as the Band of the Hills Clarinet Choir, perform in smaller venues entertaining residents of retirement homes and civic groups such as retired teachers. Audiences for the band's performances range from the youngest children to the oldest retirees. It seems that after every concert we have youngsters coming up to ask about the various instruments and how they are played and sound. When the community comes together to enjoy such concerts, social bonds are strengthened.

The cognitive benefits of learning to play an instrument and playing music are well documented (for example see https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6447697/). Band of the Hills is a large musical organization with over 100 members. As such, it also conveys the benefits of social contact and interaction, not just among the members but extended to the families and friends who support the band and enjoy its performances. Members of the band range from middle and high school age players to retirees encouraging cross-age group social interaction. As a no-audition organization, it supports a friendly, less competitive social environment than other community bands.

For the reasons outlined above, Band of the Hills is an important asset to the community it serves.

I have been a new member since November 2019. I am impressed that the band has more than 1 conductor. They use the conductors to conduct pieces at each practice and concerts. The talent range is incredible! One member is a conductor, composer and trumpet player. This person has also performed in the pit crews in New York City Broadway. The board is very organized, efficient and communicates well to the members. The Band of the Hills has 130 members which I feel is incredible. Band of the hills is welcoming and patient as well as dedicated to excellence. As a junior in high school I wasn't sure if I was going to like being in a band that wasn't my high school one but I could no longer march or be a part of our high school band but wanted to continue to play. They welcomed me in and I quickly learned I loved playing with again. It was challenging, fun, and allowed me to be me. This community band encourages “community” among a wide range of ages, diverse backgrounds, and musical skills and experiences within a group of bandsmen who are dedicated to quality and excellence. Performing with such an ensemble heightens one’s playing skill, sight reading ability, and performance confidence. I have seen first-hand from my own playing experiences, the social and musical growth one can receive seated beside someone who has been playing their instrument for 20 years or more. You simply cannot put a price tag on such an experience. I certainly encourage any musician of any skill level who would enjoy playing in an excellent concert band, such as Band of the Hills that plays a varied repertoire, to come join us and get ready to learn…and practice!

Great Organization - they give many free concerts and help share the Arts in Central Texas. Anyone is able to join regardless of musical ability so they group is open to every one and their concerts are always Great. There arege quite a many other "non-profit" musical groups in the area but charge quite a bit to attend their performances and the fees to participate are very expensive. Band of the Hill charges a very norminal fee to cover the cost of music, the director and board are not compensated, concerts are free and all funding is used to help purchase and upgrade the musical equipment the band needs. I think this is the best music group in the Austin area for all the reasons I listed - open to anyone to join, low cost of membership, no "high paid" director or board, free concerts and all the monry the organization gets goes directly in to meeting the needs of the organization and not paying any of the volunteers like some other groups may do. I Love Band of the Hills!

I have played bassoon for this band since it's inception approximately 20 years ago. My ability to play my instrument stems from my high school years where I achieved State of Texas recognition. I play a very expensive instrument so I had to give up playing upon graduation but then my husband and I put enough money together to buy one, I helped found Band of the Hills to play with, and we have been happily playing together ever since. This band is more valuable to me then just an opportunity to play bassoon again, it is a way to give back to the community my husband and I of 35 years are a part of. The friendships I have established over the years are priceless. The band director, Bob Dalrymple, is a guiding spirit and an inspiration. Playing music with a group (like we are) is one the few things you can do that uses
both sides of your brain at the same time. What a good to exercise your brain activity. Additionally, what a grand way to meet people who have common interests. Without some income it is hard keep this large band going with new challenging music as well as a large a number of other financial needs . We pay dues in order to have a barrel of fun
