BO’S STORY My name is Bo Alvarez. I was a completely normal two-year-old child until February 2005 when a babysitter was not watching me and I nearly drowned in a neighbor’s unfenced pool in Florida. My heart stopped, and I stopped breathing. I was finally resuscitated in the emergency room after twenty minutes of CPR because my mother begged the medical staff to keep trying to bring me back to life. Three days after I survived the drowning, doctors suggested to stop feeding me because I was not waking up which meant my prognosis for a full recovery was not hopeful. Mom and dad chose to keep fighting for me. Mom, my brother, Luke, and I moved to South America where I was able to receive ten hours of therapy daily for almost two years. During that time, I also traveled to China for umbilical stem cell treatment and was featured on National Geographic. We traveled to Russia in hope of receiving an unconventional treatment there, but doctors had not yet performed this treatment on a three year old. Instead, my father, a physician, learned the protocol and performed these xenon therapy treatments in South America. My parents even took me to Lourdes, France and dipped me in the miraculous waters in hope of a miracle to restore my brain. Also, during that time, my baby sister, Haile Maria, was born. Regardless of the extreme efforts of my parents, my brain damage is permanent and mom continues to help me with the activities I can no longer perform. My father continues his work as an orthopedic surgeon in Florida. Mom, Luke, Haile, and I returned to the States in 2007 and my mother started the Bo Alvarez Children's Foundation to help save other children from drowning like me. In the summer of 2010, the Foundation released “Bo to the Rescue: Water Safety for Kids” and has provided over six thousand books to each voluntary pre kindergarten provider and YMCA throughout Florida. Mom and I hope our recent efforts to teach children about water safety will help decrease the prevalence of tragic drownings, which affect not only the child, but also the entire family. Please help mom and I spread the word about water safety. We don't need to invent a pill to cure drowning, we need to make others aware of the importance of supervision, educating kids about water safety, and teaching children to swim. Your help could save an innocent child from ending up like me. Yours Truly, Bo
