I am writing regarding a experience I had at your Miriam hospital with two of your phlebotomists you have on site. I went in to have routine blood work drawn and as I drove up to Miriam hospital I parked my car and headed upstairs to the 3rd floor labatory at the cancer institute for my doctor. As I waited in the waiting room 25 minutes I finally got called by a phlebotomists name Amanda and she brought me to the chair to draw blood. I was expecting her to ask for my date of birth and she didn’t . I had to ask her if she wanted it and she rudely said I know who you are don’t need to ask. She had a coworker on the side of her chair name Molly that seem like she was new to the department. My phlebotomists Amanda kept taking her mask out of her face and rubbing her nose and eyes. She proceed to put her mask back on her face . The phlebotomists Amanda started taking out the test tubes and all the equipments tips draw blood. Amanda didn’t ask for the name or date of birth seem like she was to preoccupied. Amanda was talking to her coworker about her pregnancy and how she due in the summer and hopefully this COVID-19 crap is done so she can have her baby without complication. Molly ask Amanda if she was having baby at Miriam hospital and she responded quickly saying heck no I’ll have my baby locally near a hospital I can trust my baby with. I thought wasn’t something to talk about especially around patients coming to Miriam hospital. She grabbed on glove to put on her hand . She only used one glove which I thought was odd after the COVID-19 situation going on. She went to draw blood on my right arm and as she was talking to her coworker and she poke into my arm and keep pushing down into my vein to point I has in pain from the needle. She wiggled the needle around and for about 30 seconds and the vein ended up blowing . I ask her if she had a butterfly needle because I have tiny veins and she responded ‘ I know how to do my job.’ She pulled out the same 20 gauge needle she used in my previous arm to do the other arm. She kept same glove on and went on to the other arm. As she was trying to find vein in my arm molly interrupted her and ask what time she going to lunch she told molly , ‘ whenever I’m done here’ I felt like I was interrupting their lunch time. I was thinking of just getting up and leaving but I needed this blood work done and read before weekend. The phlebotomist finally found my vein and got blood drawn and when she was done she put a bandage and told me I was done. I ask if she could put another bandage on my other arm because was still bleeding . She gave a hesitate sign and pull on out and put it on. I come to this hospital a lot for blood work due to my Illness but in the future I will let my doctors know to send my blood work to other facilities. I will drive the extra mile to get better service. I will be contacting the CEO of Miriam Hospital about this experience and also will be contacting your fellow hospitals and make them aware of my experience. I do advise in the future to educate your employees the importance of professionalism, respect for their patient, follow safety protocol and the COVID-19 safety protocol hospital have in place. Hopefully in the future your patients don’t experience the disrespect I receive from your employees.

www.oasisinternational.info
#GivingTuesday
#OasisInternational

Several years ago, God began working on the hearts of myself and my husband to go into missions. I have never been one to want to go out of the country, whereas my husband was ready to go. About 3 years ago, God brought a ministry into our lives that has forever changed us.

We were approached at our church to help a single, Muslim woman who had 3 daughters make their home live-able. Although we were extremely nervous meeting her....we very quickly learned how lovely she is. Over the course of a summer, of being there every single weekend....we got to know their family, we got to share our faith with them...and we still have a relationship to this day. Meeting this sweet family has burned in us a desire to reach out and share the love of Jesus with every refugee we can.

Oasis offers furniture, English classes, baby showers, driving lessons and the love of Christ to these refugee families. I would ask that you go to their website at www.oasisinternational.info and learn more about their non-profit.

Oasis has made a difference in these frightened and alone sweet people. It has made us aware that so many are right here about 20 minutes from my home. They come from war torn countries, they have left their homes, their families, their countries and they are all so thankful to be in the United States of America.

Join us as we make a difference in their lives. As we love them like Jesus loves.

Why I give to GAIA and I would like to ask you to give too: It is no secret that I am one of the founders of GAIA Vaccine Foundation. What you may not know is that I gave $500 per month to GAIA Vaccine Foundation in 2012, and just as much the year before (and before that). And in 2013, I plan to give even more. Why is that? GAIA is one of the best investments that I have ever made with my donation dollars. See more about that below.* I believe in GAIA's vision. GAIA's goal is to "support the development of a globally relevant, globally accessible HIV/AIDS vaccine". It takes a long time (over 20 years) to make a vaccine, so it should come as no surprise that we're still working on that mission. In fact, just this year, GAIA (and scientists at EpiVax) published a few papers on the vaccine (see here if one of several scientific reports on the vaccine). I believe that we will get there, because, as one of the founders, I believe in our mission. I give to GAIA because I want to end AIDS in our lifetime, and GAIA has a history of delivering on promises. What's an example of that? Well, we built an HIV clinic to provide mother-to-child HIV transmission prevention to a village called Sikoro in 2006. We expanded it to include all patients (moms, dads and children) with HIV in 2008, and we're still providing HIV care there, today. That's commitment. We build relationships. We have created a solid foundation of support among West African physicians and scientists for our work. And we are building the scientific foundation for testing our HIV vaccine in the future. We have performed HIV vaccine readiness research and we publish it. We have concrete goals. Over the next year we plan to leverage innovative HIV management techniques, expand village-level HIV care and increase HIV knowledge throughout West Africa. [For more information read here]. So why should you support GAIA Vaccine Foundation? Because you know that ending AIDS in Africa is one of the things that you would like to do, in your lifetime, too. Giving to GAIA is a really great way to do that. So please click on this link, or go to http://www.gaiavaccine.org/donate and send in your contribution, today.
Thank you! Together, we can make AIDS history.

Annie De Groot MD
