Our family loves to visit Cahokia mounds! The museum, the exhibits, and the movie are all interesting and informative. The grounds are well kept, too. Sadly this last year the state closed the museum certain days due to funding shortages.

Thankfully, there is a very active volunteer group that helps schedule events, programs, and answer questions for visitors when they are open. Frequent celebrations of cultural heritage such as solstice programs at Woodhenge, and hands-on activities, are held throughout the year, catering to both children and adults. Our family learned about historical games and weapons used during the Mississippian era. We have purchased items created by native American artists and vendors at the yearly market event, and even watched and joined a dance as part of Native American ceremonies held at the site.

The museum and grounds themselves are great, but it's the volunteers that help visitors understand the significance of the Cahokia Mounds site, and give it historical perspective. Volunteers and their activities brought history to life for my children. They answer questions, offer insights, and provide hands-on activities that make learning fun and demonstrate how culture and history are real and play a part in who we are today as a modern society. You know what they say, those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

The volunteers at Cahokia Mounds bring history to life. They provide perspective, and instill a desire to learn more about the history and culture of the people of Cahokia Mounds. Events put on by volunteers keep things fresh, even after many visits over the years. Our visits to Cahokia Mounds would not have been as meaningful or memorable without the dedicated contributions of their volunteers.
