What a great experience. I attended Spay Panama for 2 weeks with a friend as penultimate year veterinary students from the UK. As a vet student, it is a great opportunity for hands on practice & really interesting to learn the different techniques used by the Spay Panama vets & pick up their tips for surgery. We spent a lot of time in pre-op initially, but still practising essential veterinary skills (I’ll never have as many bladders to empty again!). As the placement progressed, we moved on to surgeries - we practised lots of cat castrates, as well as some dog castrates & cat spays towards the end of the placement. We felt very well looked after at Spay Panama & they made sure that we not only had a great veterinary experience, but also the best time in Panama. Staff/volunteers gave up their time to show us around practically every tourist spot (& non-tourist spots!) in Panama City (& beyond!) - this, alongside accommodation & food, was also included in the donation made in return for the veterinary placement. It was a unique opportunity to see the country with locals & gain an insight into their culture. It is a great cause to be a part of & you really get stuck in & feel like you are actually helping. It was an unforgettable experience & the kindness of everyone at Spay Panama really shone through during our trip - I would love to return one day!
