There are a million nonprofits out there devoted to animals, and God bless them all. But Chain of Hope is in a class by itself. This is grassroots advocacy and rescue at its finest … and most heart wrenching. The scrappy group of volunteers (mostly women, I think), are out there in parts of town that many people would be scared to go to: Talking to abusive pet owners, reasoning with them, offering pet food and other assistance , sometimes going to to toe with people who are, by any reasonable measure, a little scary — from people keeping dogs chained up in homeless encampments to folks with numerous starving dogs tethered in their yard. I honestly don’t know how they do it. I haven’t lived in Kansas City for close to 35 years and I am proud to support Chain of Hope financially from afar as much as I can.
