Review for Action In Community Through Service of Prince William County, Dumfries, VA, USA

For 27 years I've coordinated a team of church volunteers who help at the Thrift Store each month. I've seen the store expand its locations and services and streamline its procedures for processing donations and serving the community. This past month I've made a trip to ACTS new administrative offices and large food pantry. These more modern facilities serve many more people each year and continue to be overseen by kind and efficient folks with their eye on specific needs of our community. This month I also stopped by the Emergency Shelter where a most hospitable staff member provided me a tour of the facility for which our church women's group will be doing a service project in April. I'd visited this facility years ago and was amazed by all that has been done through volunteer help to improve the facility. Even more impressive, however, was the informed and caring generosity of the staff member herself. She was quick to translate our general offer of help into a specific plan for serving shelter residents. I came away thanksful to be part of ACTS and eager to show and tell others what I'd so quickly learned about this wonderful organization.

Through this organizaton my community's needs have become personal to me. I also know that there's a way for others to help people in need. I see folks donating and shopping at the Thrift Store and I know that the profits there enable enable other community services. I've heard presentations from a number of ACTS program supervisors, and I've visited the facilities over a period of 30 years.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I believe the organization is on the right track in focussing on specific needs of human beings and personally inviting others to see and become involved in the work in process there. In this way people in our community are brought together.

Role:  Volunteer & We will be preparing personalized shower tote for teen girl shelter residents. Each tote will contain toiletries as well as a brief note of encouragement. The idea is that teen girls will own something helpful and personal and receive a word of care.
