Thrive Peninsula is the first free grocery store in the Hampton Roads Area for those who need assistance. Customers are greeted when they arrive and provided a shopping cart. They go through the store's produce, dairy, dry goods, and meat sections, picking what they want just as they would at any of the area grocery stores. Family size determines the quantities of each item they can select. At the end of their shopping experience, volunteer staff bags groceries while the customer gets their car. Then, the staff rolls their groceries out to their car. Customers often express their sincere gratitude for their experience.

Thrive also provides financial coaching for those needing assistance building a more sound financial situation. Coaches help them see where their money is going and create a budget, a debt reduction plan, and a plan for building emergency savings. For those who have fallen behind, Thrive provides financial assistance by helping them pay rent or utility bills to get back on sound footing.

The small full-time staff is dedicated to helping their neighbors. They are professional and always cheerful. As a volunteer, I find working with such wonderful people an honor. The expression of thanks from the customers and clients is overwhelming. This is a charity worth supporting.
