Review for The Tipi Raisers, Erie, CO, USA
Having moved to Colorado in 2021 and soon to retirement, I sought out some way I could give back, serve others but most importantly, learn indigenous wisdom more deeply. Started working with The Tipi Raisers since October 2023, mainly at their hub facility in Lafayette, CO. But last month was different.
I signed up for the 5 days of service projects that they organized on both the Hopi and Dine (Navajo) reservations in the vast desert of northern Arizona.
Our group from Colorado joined another group (UP) from the northeast US and about 30 of us worked together on 8 projects. My main role was sawyer, using chain saw to size logs of fallen cedar, cutting about 3 cords for an amazing Dine elder; planted seedlings on both reservations; and finished on the last work day helping employees of town of Walpi, who showed us how they harvest firewood in the wild.
My favorite part is that we begin and end each day in a circle and share of ourselves. I give thanks to the Creator every day to have found The Tipi Raisers non-profit at this point in my life. Mitakuye Oasin.
