On August 8, 2023; there was a fire that ripped through the island of Maui that devastated Kihei, Wailuku, Kula and wiped out the town of Lahaina. I currently do IT work for a nationally recognized healthcare organization. A few days after the fire was about 70% contained, I escorted our Mobile Health Vehicle into the disaster zone where our goal was to provide first aide services to Lahaina community. Once in the disaster zone, it was clear that there was little to no technical infrastructure in that area as most of the area had burnt to the foundation. There was very little commercial power and our onboard cellular networks weren't responding.
Just as I thought all hope was lost, a friend of mine asked if I needed any network assistance and introduced me to Deb and Joe of ITDRC. I have never heard of ITDRC before. They asked me how could they be of service and if a Starlink would help my situation. I knew of Starlink, but I've never used one before. I did share with them that I had a few on order, but they offered to put one in place for me as well as show me how to set it up so i would be ready when ours arrived.
Well the next morning, Deb and Joe sent me a message that their team had setup a Starlink and had already configured it for our use. At that moment, we were able to connect our physicians as well as other first responders to our organizations network. I think I cried once that happened.
ITDRC were Guardian Angels. They came out of nowhere, provided the critical help that we desperately needed and asked for nothing in return, but to be of service.
I just can't express how much I appreciated the work that ITDRC provided.
