Through my volunteer work with Building Peaceful Bridges I have had the opportunity to build wonderful friendships with newcomers from Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Democratic Republic of Congo and Central African Republic. As a mentor, I met weekly with many of these families and assisted in their resettlement in the Chicago area. We learned from each other as we practiced English, explored their neighborhoods, shared meals and celebrated holidays together. These mentor/mentee relationships have been built on mutual respect and a shared hope for the newcomers futures.
