Review for Sister-Corps, Houston, TX, USA
In November 2017 I joined the first Sister Corps project to do relief work and clean up in Port Aransas, Texas. This was my first volunteer of this sort. The weather was not being our friend, but for five days we were out with the rakes and shovels, and oversize trash bags, clearing muddy debris, from the homes and streets in the Port Aransas.
I remember painting the interior of an entire house of a woman whose place has been ruined by hurricane Harvey. The gratitude and camaraderie of both those who gave, and those who received was heartwarming.
Being a retired nurse, I was also on the medical care team, making certain all of our team members were cared for in case of an injury.
Five years later, the members of that first Sister Corps project reunited in Port Aransas. Driving down those streets, we remembered the way it had been. It was wonderful to see how Port Aransas came back from Hurricane Harvey and it’s a thriving little town.
And of course, when we went back in 2022 we didn’t leave it as we found it. A group of Sisters hand painted a 50 foot section of fence at a local daycare center. And after that, we all hit the beach for a cleanup of debris there.
The camaraderie , passion and love that the Sister Corps projects bring not only to the communities they serve, but in the group members themselves ,is a testament to the heart of this organization.
