From Sister-Corps inception in 2017 (due to Hurricane Harvey) I knew this was my chance to help others beyond my own community. Myself being affected by several natural disasters, I knew what the needs and the broken hearts felt like. The fact that this was being led by all women was even more enticing-I knew I could comfortably “fit in” and not be questioned as to my “strength” when compared to a man.
After the first project in Port Aransas, the fire was blazing within me and I knew I would never question why I joined this amazing volunteer disaster-relief group! ALL volunteers pay their way (food, lodging & travel) ALL donations go to those affected by disasters! Whether the woman is 21 or 81-all heart and energy is given to each project! The work could be debris removal, sheetrock, flooring, painting etc. or just a sympathetic listening ear-if a volunteer isn’t at a project site, they are back at Base Camp making the behind-the-scenes run smoothly, there is something for EVERY volunteer to do! Health and Safety are a top priority as well, with a medical team always available. Training opportunities abound-skills and self-esteem are found within each woman that she may not even know she had! Sister-Corps is growing by leaps and bounds-communities are left with physical progress and all hearts are fulfilled!
Joining Sister-Corps is one decision in my life I will never question! I have learned and gained more than I ever imagined and have become a better, more-well rounded woman than I ever thought possible! Sister-Corps is truly an organization that you can say “who helped who”?!!!
