Review for The Grey School of Wizardry, Whitehall, NY, USA

Rating: 5 stars

The Grey School of Wizardry is primarily an online school dedicated to teaching Wizardry to apprentices of any age, at any educational level, covering a broad array of topics grouped together into sixteen departments, ranging from psychic arts, to natural philosophy, to mathemagicks. No matter what your background in magick may be, there is much to learn at the Grey School of Wizardry.

It is obvious that the school was designed nearly twenty years ago to cater to children and teenagers, drawing from the Harry Potter trends. However, especially recently, the school is geared more and more towards adults, while still being accessible to a younger crowd. If one approaches learning at Grey School with an open mind, the same assignment that a fifteen year old would complete hastily as "just another essay," can be completed with much time and thought invested, and will yield greater rewards this way. The quality of feedback from instructors is currently top-notch.

The school is designed to be at-your-own-pace, so one can dedicate as much time and energy as they choose, and pick and choose what kinds of classes to focus on. As a college graduate (B.S in Biology), I can attest that "you get out of it what you put into it" is more true at Grey School than at the university I attended. It is clear that every faculty member is committed to the growth of each apprentice who enrolls at Grey School, and the hiring process appears to focus on mastery over subject matter as much as ability to teach and inspire.

One can compare the teaching at Grey School with that of a university in the United States, in terms of quality, breadth and depth of subjects, and the passion of the instructors. A key thing to keep in mind, tuition for an apprentice is $30/month or $300/year, and follows a structured 7-level program; the magister program is $40/month or $400/year and is a more a la carte style program. Even at $400/year, this beats any community college or state university by a long shot. Add in that you can get by with a single softcover textbook for about $20 as the required textbook for the entire school, augmented with online resources, many of which are accessible for free, and it is financially much more reasonable to attend Grey School to explore learning, rather than enroll in a college just because it is more socially acceptable.

The experiences had, lessons learned, and skills developed have practical applications in the real world, beyond theoretical magickal practice. An entire department is dedicated to Wortcunning (herbalism), and focuses on growing or harvesting plants, using them in cooking recipes or for other practical purposes, and the safe handling of the plants. Another is dedicated to the psychic arts, which can be boiled down to meditation and mastery of one's own mind, a skill which is helpful no matter who you are or where you work. It is also a big deal that the community at Grey School is an inclusive, welcoming one, with people from all walks of life, and all religions, around the world, interacting on a daily basis through the school website, forums, and Discord server.

Grey School has a lot to offer the public, and I encourage anyone interested in magick to at least look at the webpage. It is NOT for everyone, but the qualities that make an apprentice and the school a poor fit tend to be lack of motivation and lack of an open mind on the part of the apprentice, rather than the quality of Grey School, its teachers or the individual courses. As Grey School moves into the future, expanding their physical campus and their online offerings, I expect great things out of the school as well as the wizards coming out of it.
