Review for For Pete's Sake Cancer Respite Foundation, Plymouth Meeting, PA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

"Making your way in the world today
Takes everything you've got
Taking a break from all your worries
Sure would help a lot
Wouldn't you like to get away?"

The lyrics from the theme song to the TV classic Cheers, addresses the longings of the everyday person. Give the world's every day person cancer, and that song represents what For Pete's Sake charity (FPS) wants to give them. Take a break from all your worries. Wouldn't you like to get away? Everyone longs to escape their troubles, but none so much as the person whose every though is cancer related; family = cancer, finances = cancer, health = cancer, self = cancer.

FPS allows you to take yourself and loved ones to enjoy seasonal fun at the Woodloch Resort in Pa. I am a16 year survivor of stage 4 Breast Cancer, overcoming predictions of numbers and rates. Yet, FPS gave me my first chance to experience a "Respite" vacation with 9 other families in which a partner had recent active cancer. My husband and I had " at your leisure" choices like swimming at the indoor pool, slide, and hot tubs, or participating in snow tube slides, ice skating, go carts, bumper cars, arcades, spa activities, or rest. We could also choose group activities, like the escape room, paint and sip, build a boat, race the boat, baking contests and the group's s'more fire pit. Between the activities and gourmet meals, the respite FPS gave my husband and myself was indeed, beyond expectation. I feel rejuvenated, ready to bring change to my life, yet also energized to continue with necessary routines.

Play. Forget cancer for 6 days. Be undefined by sickness. Let your thoughts go somewhere other than to sickness. This is the tremendous gift FPS gives.

Pete felt such a trip with his wife was important some 20 years ago, and shares the fruit of it, through his wife Marci. She established For Pete's Sake Foundation on a hope, and an unfinished letter from her husband.

It's a chance to get a second wind and new insight, to fight again, to remember what normal is and to make treasured memories. Because of this opportunity - celebrate life.
Thank you!
