Review for Straight Spouse Network Inc, Chicago, IL, USA

Rating: 5 stars

This group is a godsend and a lifesaver. It is the only one of its kind in the world that provides support to straight spouses/partners whose lives are often devastated by the struggles, hidden lives, or coming out of their spouses/partners. When this happened to me, I was living abroad, but through this group I knew that I was not alone, and I was provided the understanding and support that helped me rebuild a new life for myself. In my darkest hours, this group was a beacon of light and hope. They helped me work through all the stages of grief, and to come to the understanding that this was not my fault and that I do have worth. I have never met such a group of caring, dedicated people in my life. It is now 4 years after disclosure and the end of my marriage, and the members of this group remain my closest friends and my lifeline whenever needed. Please support the Straight Spouse Network so others like me can recover and rebuild.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

my own life and the lives of my friends.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

work as hard as the current organizers do to reach more of the over 2 million people who find themselves in the situation of being straight spouses.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the friendships I've developed.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

amazing-- generous, compassionate, patient, committed, and willing to take a call from someone in need anytime anywhere.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

reach so many more straight spouses and partners and help them rebuild their lives.

Ways to make it better...

It couldn't have been better. Support was fast, generous, sustained, and full of compassion.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

it's hard for those who haven't been through the experience to understand it. And many assume that SSN doesn't support the gay community, which is absolutely incorrect. If our spouses had felt free to be themselves, pain would have spared all around.

One thing I'd also say is that...

no matter how much time passes from the day I found out my husband was gay, even 10, 20, 30 years from now, I will always be indebted to this organization for helping me heal.

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

2009
