My Nonprofit Reviews

Review for Prostate Cancer Research Institute, Culver City, CA, USA
I am both an 18 year prostate cancer thriver and an advocate. I have had the great pleasure of working hand-in-hand with PCRI for over 10 years.
I am a regular attender of their annual LA conference and have consistently found that their programs and conference agenda have been excellent. They are patient oriented and teach men and their caregivers about prostate cancer and how to make better medical decisions.
They empower men and their caregivers with education, humor and an opportunity to meet and learn from 100's of other prostate cancer thrivers.
Unlike many other prostate cancer non-profits they "play well in the sand box" with other non-profits. Clearly, their primary orientation is towards supporting the men with prostate cancer. At the last LA conference I mentioned that my non-profit Cancer ABCs (www.CancerABCs.org) was going to be running a screening program in Harlem and that we were struggling to raise the capital needed for the program. Later that day their Executive Director handed me an envelope with a very generous donation to support our program.
They are tops, care first about patients and are an important and well respected resource for men who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer and their caregivers.
Review for National Alliance Of State Prostate Cancer Coalitions, Los Angeles, CA, USA
Established to help states create coalitions which then come together as a single organization to train the state coalitions on advocacy and programing with the goal of increasing awareness of prostate cancer; improving diagnosis and treatments; understanding the plight of prostate cancer survivors and improving prostate cancer survivor's quality of life.

Review for Malecare, Inc., New York, NY, USA
When I was first diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer I was lost as I looked for support and help from different organizations. Malecare's different support group system (weekly without lectures) answered my need to find support and then challenged me to become involved and work to expand its services to other men and their loved ones. It is an amazing organization for any man fighting cancer. As the logo says: Men Fighting Cancer, Together.

Review for Malecare, Inc., New York, NY, USA
To clarify, I am both a volunteer and a client served. Malecare is the only national organization that serves both straight, gay and transgender men diagnosed with cancer. It is also the only organization that has developed support programs for men with advanced and recurrent prostate cancer. When I was first diagnosed with recurrent prostate cancer I searched from one organization to another, went from one support group to another and was unable to find any program that attempted to meet my personal needs. This was despite the fact that I lived in New York City! Malecare's weekly support group was the only group I attended that reached out to me and helped me deal with my individual situation. The men who participated and the group leader provided much needed support in a time of my life that was most difficult. The leadership of Malecare (all of whom are volunteers) was flexible enough and interested in my general concerns about the lack of support programs for men with advanced disease. With the organizations support and encouragement, I was able to join with Malecare and start additional, nationally based programs designed specifically for men diagnosed with advanced disease and their families. Malecare is a true grassroots organization that is vital to our society and meeting needs of the under-served population.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
the assistance it provides to both men and their families when faced with the terrible diagnosis of cancer. Men come to the organization in a confused and crisis state and are helped to make decisions and deal with the rest of their life.
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
do a better job publicizing its work with all men and their families.
What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
its flexibility to deal with the ituation as it arises.
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
All professional volunteers!
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
rock the world of cancer support.
Ways to make it better...
It could not be better
In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...
Since it is all volunteer (no paid staff or workers)the work it does accomplish is diluted by the limits its volunteers have on time.
One thing I'd also say is that...
Malecare uses a very limited budget and makes it go a long, long way.
