Review for For The Love Of Birds A New Jersey Non Profit Corporation, Belford, NJ, USA

Rating: 5 stars

We were recently advised, by my husband’s doctor, that there was a possibility that our beloved Amazon parrot, Woodstock, was the cause of his health issues and we may have to surrender him.

The test results came back with positive antibodies to parrot proteins. We were heartbroken and devastated. I couldn’t stop crying. My husband felt terrible. I found For the Love of Birds Rescue through a simple Google search and also contacted our Avian Vet for advice.

Our vet mentioned FTLOB even before I asked him about them. He suggested that I contact them and said he had vetted some of their birds and they were a great organization. I filled out the surrender forms online on 2/2/22. I will never forget that day. I knew this day would come since our parrot is only 22 yo and will outlive us. I just didn’t think it would be this soon.

I received a phone call from one of their foster volunteers shortly afterwards. There is a saying that people come into your life for a reason or for a season. Corinne from FTLOB and I chatted for a while. She explained how the organization works, my options and the thoroughness of the adoptive process. The time she took to talk to me and the empathy and reassurance that was conveyed on that call made me feel so much better about a very difficult situation.

This story has a happy ending – sort of. At the doctor visit on 2/22/22, we were told by the doctor that our parrot was not the cause and we did not have to give him up. Antibodies are common among parrot owners. My husband’s health issues are not gone and he is not out of the woods but this one devastating part of the story is…for now.

The other thing that is not gone is Corinne, who came into my life for a reason. We are still in contact and I have made a new friend. For the Love of Birds will one day have to find a new home for our Woodstock, but when that day comes, I know they will take great care of him and make sure his new forever home is worthy of him and will love him as much as we do.

For the Love of Birds was not an available option when we got our feathered baby decades ago. But If you are someone who loves birds (as much as we do) and are looking for an addition to your family, please consider adopting from FTLOB rather than buying. Take some time to read the stories on the site. The support and resources they offer to both the old and new family is incredible. The work they do is priceless. So please consider donating to this very worthy cause in anyway you can.
