I had a horrific experience at this organization a few years back. I was on a floor with men and women (with my child). There was a man there that was hitting on me and made me very uncomfortable. I was also housed next to a crazy woman who harassed me daily, called me names, and threatened me, making my life there unbearable. She was jealous and was relentless on stalking and harassing me. When I complained to my counselor they did nothing to help me. They would have fire drills in the middle of the night, forcing families to stand out on the street after being woken up. I got an overnight pass and the woman who I gave it to didn't let the front desk know and this was done deliberately, I am sure, to sabotage me. I ended up leaving, basically running for my life and sanity from this place. Truly horrible, traumatic experience I will never forget.

Back in 2013 my child and I went to the SH in Jamaica Queens and were treated horribly. The "counselor" outright lied about my participating, saying I "refused", the child advocate offered to get my child a spot in a summer camp then acted like she didn't want to help us after all, and behaved like we were putting her out when asked to follow through with referral. The "director" was nasty and rude, even confronting me when I chose to exit the program due to their abuse and came to my face to ask if I wanted to file a complaint in a threatening manner (I did file a complaint).
I was astounded at the abuse received by these people, when I went there to leave a domestic violence situation. They went out of their way to make our lives harder, lied, were threatening and hateful. These people have not business in an organization that is supposed to be helping women and their children. That experience really opened my eyes about dv shelters and how women are abused further while they are there.
