Review for Shakespeare & Company, Inc., Lenox, MA, USA
Shakespeare & Company is an invaluable resource for our community. Not only do they perform the great plays of Shakespeare, as well as those of contemporary playwrights, but they also play a great part in bringing Shakespeare to the schools in our area. The school I work at, Berkshire Montessori, each year performs a condensed version of one of Shakespeare's plays, under the direction of a Shakespeare & Co. employee. And every Fall they send their people out to many high schools in Berkshire County, MA, and Columbia County, NY, to direct the young people in some of the best theatrical productions I've ever seen at the secondary school level.
Shakespeare & Co. also makes their costume wardrobe available for an event our Montessori elementary students put on every year. We call it the "Historical Dinner". Each student researches a person who is important in history, makes a mannekin representing that person, dressed in an appropriate costume from S&Co. These figures are then seated around tables as if at a dinner party, tablemates having been chosen based on common attributes of the historical persons. (Thus, last year Saddam Husein sat by himself, dressed in a fine military uniform from S&Co, because the students felt he would have nothing in common with other historical figures like Lincoln or Ghandi.)
