This company does the best Shakespeare I've ever seen, consistently, to the point where they reveal to even a Shakespearean scholar (me) lnes of truth and insight I'd missed, despite my knowing virtually the entire canon. However, they are intro-friendly and spread Shakespeare to novice audiences because they are very conscious of the need to make Shakespeare enjoyable to average Americans, adults and students alike. S&Company speak the verse clearly, without being stilted or overly intellectual, engage the audience in a variety of ways, and are consistently and truly funny. And that is only their within their "performance" mission statement. As a teacher, I knew firsthand of how extraordinary the company is at winning over a student audience or engaging in workshops that students never forget, encouraging and even inspiring them. I brought the company out 70 miles once a year to put on their touring production and they were always tremendous experiences for 600 kids.

This remarkable program provides high school students with the opportunity to learn about drama - and more importantly themselves - under the expert tutelage of internationally acclaimed professional actors, technicians, and costumers. The dedication of these professionals to their craft - and more impressively to the students - is a marvel. To see hesitant, often shy, young people blossom before your eyes on stage - in just a matter of weeks - is an extraordinary experience for the adult volunteers. It's a truly transformative experience for the young people themselves.

I worked with Shakespeare and Company in many different capacities. My children benefited from the programs they ran at their high school, they worked with my fourth grade students for 10 weeks to put on a Shakespeare play, my mother was the principal of a middle school where they worked, I attended a workshop they offered to teachers, and I've attended many of their productions. After all these experiences I truly think that Shakespeare and company is an extraordinary organization. My children felt it was one of the best things they were involved in during high school and that it had a profound impact on them. They were given respect for their ideas, feelings and abilities and ended up producing an incredibly professional performance, that they felt very proud of. The work they did with my 4th grade students was also amazing. They brought out aspects of my students I had never seen before. They managed to keep everything playful and fun. They were able to bring out the best in all my students and taught me much about handling my most difficult kids. The workshop I attended went deep and truly made me think differently about teaching Shakespeare to children. I am always amazed at how effortlessly I am able to understand Shakespearean English when I watch Shakespeare and Company's performances. I have worked with innumerable staff members, all whom were excellent. I keep thinking the next crew can't be as good, but they always are. I am also impressed with the work they do with adjudicated young people. They are truly a unique organization and one I hope will be around for a long time.

I think Shakespeare and Company is one of the most astounding organizations I have ever encountered. I have been involved with Shakespeare and Company as an audience member, the parent of two high school students involved in the Fall Festival, a teacher of a 4th grade class that Shakespeare and Company worked with for 10 years and as a workshop participant. Each of these experiences have been outstanding. As an audience member I enjoy and understand Shakespeare performances better than any company I have ever seen. The Fall Festival was one of the best experiences both of my children had in High School. The staff's ability to bring out the creativity of all participants, to incorporate their ideas and energy and to help teenagers grow emotionally was exceptional. As a teacher I loved the playful way the company brought out the best in ALL my students. They managed to keep the work fun and yet, at the same time, deep. My students were enthusiastic Shakespeare lovers at the end of their experiences. The workshop I attended was one of the best teacher workshops I have ever gone to. I am also impressed with the work the company does with juvenile offenders. This is a company with high standards for all they do and they always seem to meet their own and my expectations.

My wife, son and I have been attending Shakespeare & Company performances since about their second season. We find the productions excellent with clear dialogue and action that conveys the meaning of language not always similar to our own and that propels the story. My son went to his first performance at about age 3 and was silent throughout as he was transfixed by the language and action. The productions are always wonderful.

The arts are crucial to our experience of being human. Shakespeare is at the center of our western tradition of literary and performance artistry. Shakespeare & Co. reinterprets the Bard's and related work for our new age. I continue to be thrilled by and learn so much from this most excellent troupe's work. Their mission is entertainment, philosophy and education - exploring what makes us human and how to be better at it. My 16 year old son still proclaims his Riotus Youth experiences as among the best of his life, and he is not an aspiring actor. Some of my family's most transforming times have been as audience members at S & Co. They are very worthy of continued support.

Shakespeare and Company will be celebrating its 35th year with some wonderful productions scheduled. Meanwhile, they can look back on the past year of outstanding productions with pride. The company is now year round with a robust fall production of The War of the Worlds, a Christmas delight with Santaland and an incredibly funny production of Moliere's Learned Lady with a skilled cast of young and talented actors. This is a company that provides its audiences with unique theatrical experiences. One can not praise it enough.

My husband and I have been attending Shakespeare and Company for twenty-five years or more. Our son and daughter-in-law attended their summer training program and a winter intensive. We attend a great deal of theatre in his country, Canada and Great Britain, but there is a special quality to Shakespeare and Company. There is an energy and a vitality to the company that is unique. We would take our friends to see the performances at the Mount and will never forget the magic of seeing As You Like It and A Midsummer's Night Dream out of doors. However, it makes no difference where they perform, indoors or out, they make plays come alive. We enjoyed their Bare Bard performances, their comedies at the Elaine Bernstein theatre, their student productions; all were outstanding. I have always been amazed that everyone who works there, not just the actors and the other artistic people , but the box office people, the ticket takers, the food people, all exude the same friendly, enthusiastic spirit. We are thrilled that they not have performances in the fall and winter so that we can enjoy them all year round.

Every year my girls and I prepare for another wonderful Shakespeare experience at Shakespeare and Company. It's not just a show, it's an experience. The whole place brings you in right away, there are people in period costume before the show doing bits outside. Afterwards, we always go meet the talented actors and we learn something more. The show itself always brings a new light to an old favorite, or shows us something we've never seen. They have grown up on Shakespeare and Company and now -- at 21, 18 and 11 -- are big fans, thanks to this wonderful company. We are ever grateful.

For years, my girls have been learning and enjoying the magic of Shakespeare because of this wonderful company. They bring it to life, make it relevant, and, importantly, affordable. Because of Tina Packer's Tales of Shakespeare, my three daughters and I prepare easily for each production, and then find ourselves immersed in talent, skill, imagination, and delight for each one. The unique take of the director for the tens of productions we have seen spurs fantastic conversation. The generosity of the actors after each production allows my girls and I access to them, talking for a few minutes (or more!) each time about motivation, difficulty, and involvement. Shakespeare and Company has made Shakespeare lovers out of my girls, now 19, 17 and 10. Thank you to them, and long may they live.

We bring our college students, especially those in theatre, to see Shakespeare performed with understanding, energy, and imagination that is unsurpassed in my experience. Seeing actors work in repertory gives audiences a clearer sense of the nature of acting. The openness with which actors have talked with our students after performances adds to this. Seeing Shakespeare staged in a space that resembles the Renaissance stage structure for which it was written is a revelation every time. The ability to walk the grounds and think about the play after seeing it enhances the playgoing experience, too.

I can scarcely believe that I did not train at Shakespeare and Company before I did. I've trained with some very fine institutions, but participating (not just learning!) in the innovative work and positive, constructive approach to developing ourselves as theater artists--while we quite literally lived and breathed Shakespeare--was not only great training, but also allowed me to bear witness to the way in which this work inspired actors and teachers to deeper and more personal exploration. I can't recommend S & Co more highly.

Shakespeare & Company reminds us, vividly and powerfully, in all the work they do as artists, producers, educators of young people, trainers of theater professionals and champions of relishing the human connection that can be experienced so vividly in Shakespeare's plays, that there are lifelong rewards for engagement with any art, and that such engagement can re-invigorate our imaginations, re-awaken our humanity and expand our capacity for empathy and compassion. This is vital and necessary work in all times, but especially during these days of struggle for so many. Shakespeare and Company's outreach to area schools and juvenile courts is a powerful reminder that theater can and does change and save lives every day.

Shakespeare and Co entered our family's life with actors' residencies in our elementary and middle schools. These were not only the education specialists, who are terrific, but their star actors! My kids learned so much from working with the professionals, who spent I think 6 weeks in the schools! The approach they took, exploring language until each student could understand and feel what Shakespeare was intending to say, was fantastic. A life-changing experience for us all.

I have participated in the Fall Festival of Shakespeare for the past four years and it is literally the best time of my year. The environment in everyday rehersal as well as the actual four day festival in Lenox is so welcoming and friendly. Everyone I've met through it is somehow an amazingh person. I don't know of many other places you can find that.

Not only are the student there awesome, though; the people who work there exceed expectations by miles. Working with many of them through Fall Festival and Shakespeare and Young Company, I continue to be amazed. They are all so talented as actors and mentors. They know exactly how to bring out the best in all of their students so they not only produce great plays, but grow as actors as well.

Every play I've seen there as well has been impecable. Whether is Shakespeare or not, the actors, directors and designers all give 110%. I've never been to S&Co and not enjoyed my time.

Shakespeare and Company has changed my outlook on Shakespeare and on acting. It's the most amazing place on Earth.

The training at Shakespeare & Co. changed my life, both personally and professionally, in a profound way. I became a better actor and, frankly, a better human being for having spent a month in an environment of such intense warmth, inclusiveness, creativity, challenge, support, and inquiry. On a daily--if not hourly or more frequent basis--we not only increased our technical prowess, but we asked questions about the bigger issues of art. What does it mean to be human? How do we tell stories that move, excite, inspire our fellow humans? Many theatres can produce fine actors from their training programs, but this is the only one I've encountered that produces not only better artists, but better members of society.

As an audience member, I can say that this is some of the finest, most technically clear, and most heartfelt and sincere work I've ever seen on stage and I am privileged to have witnessed it.

I first became aware of S&Co many years ago when I was Chairman of the DeSisto School in Stockbridge MA, a school for troubled teens. S&Co provided a unforgettable experience for the students, many of whom had never seen a play or acted or participated in any of the myriad opportunities a theatre company provides. The relationship went on for many years. As a result of the interaction of the Desisto School and S&Co, the school initiated a performing arts program, giving these troubled teens a wonderful expressive outle. tAs an attendee I have always been impressed with the calibre of the perfomers and performances. S&Co provides a very needed place in the Berkshire community.

As a teacher and Drama instructor at one of the high schools that takes part in The Fall Festival of Shakespeare, I can vouch for the enormous benefit of this program to our students. Over the nineteen years I have been involved, I have seen countless numbers of students get so excited about being in a Shakepeare play that they can't wait for school to begin in the fall because it means auditions and rehearsal for the Fall Festival will soon be starting. Many of our students take part in the Festival as they are older students because they have heard so much about it, but many others start as freshmen, some as actors and some as technical crew, and grow into larger character or technical roles as they mature and gain confidence. The day after the Festival finishes, when we have our final meeting at school, called closure, the students express very emotionally what being involved in the Festival has meant to them. It is a day filled with tears, but of the best kind, because the tears acknowledge just how pleased they are to have had this experience, and how much they will miss this very special magical feeling of being on stage with a completely appreciative audience and castmates who have rehearsed together to the point of virtuosity. This program has become the most important part of the performing arts calendar at Springfield Central High School, and is a large part of what helped our school identify itself as a magnet school for the Arts.

Shakespeare and Company is a tremendous asset not only to the local community, but their affect reaches across the nation. Not only does the company offer a superb collection of artists doing really powerful performance work on the stage, but their professional training programs are truly top-notch, and their education programs have made significant impact in the intellectual and emotional growth of many youngsters. I had the tremendous good fortune of growing up with the in-schools education programs offered by Shakespeare and Company, which provided the foundation for a life practice of working collaboratively, with honesty and integrity. I have since founded a theatre company dedicated to site-specific interactive performances, in some ways quite different from traditional stage work, but the core elements of emotional truth and clarity of thought and speech in performance, that I first experienced at S&Co, is at the heart of my approach. I put the full strength of my voice behind supporting this company.

As a teacher at Upper Cape Tech over the 2007/08 and the 2008/09 school years I was introduced to Shakespeare and Company and attended a summer week long teacher training. The teacher training is aplicable and easy to use in a lesson plan, which is grounded in a student centered-format. The training helped me regain my love of Shakespeare and it prepared my colleagues and me to go back into our classrooms with a renewed confidence.
The practicality of the summer teacher training which takes place at the Shakespeare and Company campus in Lenox, is also the cost (which is very reasonable) and the time committment. It seems that Shakespeare and Company has really tried to make itself available to school districts that are always trying to stretch their professional development budgets, and they offer this training when most teachers can make the time committment. Bravo to all the Shakespeare and Company employees and donors who make this experience possible!

I can tell you as a classroom teacher who has taught the struggling student, and the less confident student, that all students can be reached by using the methods that have been developed by the Shakespeare and Company teacher trainers. I am now an ELA instructional leader for an urban school district in Rhode Island, and as Rhode Island's new State Standards will be the Common Core, (which are based on Massachusett's State Standards), the Shakespeare and Company teacher training, is something I will direct my teachers to. The end result is having an engaged classroom of students confident in their ability to experience and understand the language of Shakespeare.

We appreciate Shakespear & Company on multiple levels. For many years we have attended performances. We have never been disappointed....the caliber of the actors--including the actors in training/students, the quality of the material, is truly inspiring. Conversations with students confirm our impression of the life-changing experience time spent with S&Co is for them. Indeed, we value S&Co so much it was a key reason for our deciding to retire to the area.

Over the years we have read with amazement the extensive outreach during the year, the number of students exposed to great works and the impact such exposure must have on them. We have attended numerous performances at which children of all ages have been in the audience. In an age increasingly online, to have children experience live theater, up close and personal, REAL, must stand out as unusual, if not unique, special, and not only thought-provoking, but fun!

The educational programs at S&Co are life-changing, even for those who are not professional actors - perhaps especially for them. The creative ways of approaching Shakespeare's text deepen and enhance understanding of the plays, but can also make ordinary interactions and self-reflection more powerful. I took a month-long intensive workshop more than 15 years ago, followed by shorter studies with various teachers. I have used techniques in teaching my own classes, many of which have not even been in theater. And my two children were raised as lovers of Shakespeare, partly because of being enthralled at an early age by productions on the Mount.

We have been attending performances at Shakespeare and Company for about ten years and have never been disappointed. The major productions are wonderful, but we especially enjoy the performances at the Bernstein which feature the younger members of the company or the intern program. Summer in the Berkshires is great, but we love having quality theatre during the rest of the year at Shakespeare and Company.

Training at this company last summer in the Summer Young Company, Interning, performing, and watching many of the shows night after night has brought me invaluable knowledge and experience about the world of theatre, as well as very strong and personal love for the works of Shakespeare and storytelling. The Company is so united in working as an ensemble of creative artists, each with different skill sets, but all working cohesively to create great theatre and a wonderful atmosphere to work, learn, and play.

The training I received at the Shakespeare & Co. Intensive monrth-long workshop informed my teaching and my performing for many years. This is a company that takes very seriously the power and possibility of the complete human . In an era dominated by mediated entertainment, it is inspiring to experience what this company can do with fit bodies, barre-naked voices, dynamic speech, and respect for the text. Their performances are always full of lively surprises, but refreshingly free of gimmickry.

Shakespeare & Company has brought thoughtful, understandable productions of the Bard's plays, of Edith Wharton adaptations, and of many contemporary works to audiences in The Berkshires for over 30 years. The audiences know they are going to experience something fresh, alive and relevant when they come to S&Co. More importantly, S&Co has influenced many generations of youth through their schools programs and through teacher training. Through the many teachers they have trained -- either in weekend session or month- long intensives -- they have rendered Shakespeare's plays more accessible to secondary and elementary school students. They have made a difference in our world.

I have done multiple workshops with Shakespeare & Company and they have all benefitted me as a teacher, an actor and a human being. I think it is their extraordinary humane approach to Shakespeare and the art of sharing his words that sets them apart as trainers and mentors. I don't think my acting or my teaching would be what they are today if I hadn't been opened up as a human being by Shakes & Co. It is their focus on an artist's humanity that encourages a deeper ability to connect to an audience and to give them a richer experience of Shakespeare - and any writer - because actors trained by Shakes & Co reveal more on stage.

My daughter and I are from Washington state and started attending Shakespeare & Company summer productions in Massachusetts two years ago while in Massachusetts visiting an elderly relative. She fell in love with Shakespeare at 8 years old and I credit the intimacy, immediacy (and affordability) of the Shakespeare & Co venues. We've seen something in every theater on the site the past two summers and are planning our next trip east around the upcoming season. Even though my daughter doesn't understand all the words, our proximity to the actors and their ability to make Shakespeare's intentions so well understood have meant that she has vastly enjoyed the plays. We have seen other Shakespeare productions since in Seattle and I have been to many, including the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, but we both rank the Lenox company as the best! The relatively low ticket prices, free demonstrations, and free short productions, make them particularly accessible for families and others who otherwise could not afford to enjoy such performances as often. My daughter raved so much about the free show "More Words, More Play" last year that we returned with to see it again with two other families (including 4 more kids under 12). I can't say enough good about the venue, the actors, the productions or the experience - I just wish we didn't have to travel 3000+ miles to enjoy it every summer!

Shakespeare & Co. is an amazing organization, especially in the field of education/teacher preparation. In 2001, I participated in a month-long seminar sponsoted by the National Endowment for the Humanties. Twenty-five teachers, froma cross the country, learned the most effective ways to teach Shakespeare through performance, as well as what it's like to act Shakespeare. It was an incredible, transformative experience and changed the way I did certain things in the classroom. Because of the seminar, for years I have participated in the NYC Student Shakespeare Festival with students from Grade 2-7. I have used everything I learned in my classroom, and much of the knowledge cuts across the curriculum.

I also participated in many workshops given by the Training Department, including Making a Personal Connection to the Text, Dropping In, and Text Analysis.

Their productions are clear and emotionally accessible.

Shakespeare and Company are successful in pursuit of (at least) two important goals. They produce and present excellent regional theater including wonderful productions of several Shakespeare plays each year. Perhaps more importantly, they are working to produce a new generation of actors and theater lovers. This work includes training for actors and the "fall festival" program where members of the resident company work with local high schools to cast and produce a Shakespeare play that is performed in the high school and then brought to the theater in Lenox, MA for a 2-3 day festival where each high school cast performs their work and shares in the love of the work and of theater. For the teens who participate the experience can be transforming, and generates a life long interest in the plays, the language and in theater generally. I have seen few regional theater companies who directly serve such a broad range of ages and audiences, and do so with outstanding results.

Shakespeare and Compnay is a National treasure. It excels in four areas - exciting Shakespeare and modern productions, excellence in acting, especially in the area of clarity of text, a top grade education programme in the Massachusetts community schools and a very special professional actors' training programme. The company is a family which is a part of the community. It has survived when many other companies have had to close down, because it is highly rated locally and nationally. The work of Shakespeare and Company is greatly valued by audiences, Company members, every child that has grown up with the company in their schools and loyal volunteers. I have been a company member for many years. It is a special creative 'home' where I feel that I can grow and help to enrich the lives of all who visit and work in Theatre. I attended the January Intensive two years ago, and I'm STILL mining the discoveries about myself to be a more generous actor and authentic person. The Intensive stretched and grew me in ways I hadn't had in years, if ever. It's NOT for sissies; fourteen-hour days in six-day weeks will take you beyond what you thought you could do, and they'll bust you on old habits and mannerisms and life-cheating inauthenticities, which isn't pretty. But when confronting self-defeating barriers, their message isn't, "you're not good enough" but rather "this isn't worthy of you," meaning, "you're capable of greatness and I want to see it!" It's a tremendous gift when someone (and in Shakespeare & Co.'s case, everyone) takes a stand for the personal truth and passion you've been hiding from. The entire faculty is rooting for your truest, most life-affirming self to emerge, and the spirit of compassion and generosity runs deep and wide here.

Further, spending a month with some forty-odd other people who seek to show up and take themselves on in the name of Shakespeare and Art is nothing short of awe-inspiring. You'll adore these people for the rest of your life.

Again, not for the faint of heart, but if you really want to find depth and freedom in your work, it's a jolly good place to start. Worth every single penny, whether it boosts your career or not (and it often does).

I am impressed by both the substance and range of the offerings at Shakespeare and Company, because in my work with nonprofit organizations I know that one sometimes ends up having to be sacrificed for the other.

There is so much good offering all year long, not just for summer visitors. There are standout performances every year without fail. We like the opportunities this organization offers, for example, to meet with directors, for example, and find out how productions work. We appreciate their efforts to teach us about their craft. My family, which includes 4 children under 13, always finds things that everyone truly enjoys and that don't patronize kids, which is often a problem with children's theatre. There is always a free funny performance, for example, in some great theatrical tradition under the tent in the summer to which we look forward. The kids' access to Shakespeare is a gift. And the performances of Shakespeare themselves are tremendous. I think this organization is a wonder.

More than just their training programs, however, I've seen first hand the wonderful work they do in the Education department, and the mainstages. The company is filled with good people committed to doing good theatre, and that is sometimes hard to find.

My wife and I live in Cambridge, MA, but we make sure to spend at least a week in the Berkshires every summer to do a blitz of all Shakespeare & Co. productions. We find most of their interpretations of the Bard to be fresh, though we sometimes question the acting. Tina Packer's "Women of Will" last season was masterful--an exposition of Shakespeare's works by a professional who has spent many years studying the plays and speaking about them with Shakespeare scholars. The company is unique.

I started my involvement with Shakespeare & Company's Educational programs when I was twelve years old. I participated in plays at my school (residencies), The Fall Festival, Shakespeare & Young Company, etc. I always found the teachers and directors to be professional, dedicated and passionate about the theater. As a teenager, I felt like their programs gave me an outlet to learn about Shakespeare, theater
and more so myself. I had the chance to be heard and to really listen to my peers. I made lasting connections with other students. These programs really touched my life and I'm still grateful to have been a part of them. It also inspired me to make a life and career in the theater, which I do today.

Shakespeare and Company, Inc. has provided my children's schools with outstanding guidance and support making Shakespeare come alive to middle and high school English students. Their very professional and experienced approach has encouraged parents to scramble to find funding to continue these programs.

In addition to providing education programs, the company provides an outstanding theater program spanning classical to avant garde works. The Bard 's influence continues even as the group builds toward a vision of community theater suited to the upcoming generation of playwrights. The physical theater space reflects the open and engaging philosophy of this group.

I've run NEH institutes for teachers of Shakespeare of my own at the Univ of Maryland, but what Sh & Co does is far, far more powerful. All of their programs, from the schools of Massachusetts to national institutes for teachers change lives. Kevin Coleman is the heart of the operation. He has the most profound and compelling vision of what literature, specifically drama, super-specifically Shakespeare, can do in our classrooms at every level. He is a genius at education (leading folks out of narrownesses) and "inducation" (leading folks into their core fears and hopes. For many Shakespeare, literature, and the arts, are decoration, icons for culture. For Kevin and everyone at Sh & Co, they are the core of what just might make us more human and humane.

The actor training I received at Shakespeare & Co was nothing short of transformational. It reinvigorated my career and opened pathways to creativity that I was unaware of. Any actor, whether a performer of Shakespeare or not, would benefit from their training. The personal connection to the work and dedication to the craft that results is hard to find elsewhere. The dedication and hard work of the teachers and staff is continually inspiring and their unstinting concern for the development of each actor in the program is inspiring.

I started attending Shakespeare & Co. productions in 1988 when I lived 4 hours away from Lenox, MA. I haven't missed a season since then. Now that I live in neighboring lee, I try to see every production that they offer, sometimes as an usher and sometimes as a paying patron. If Shakespeare & Co. is doing a show, it's a safe bet that it will be excellent. The company chooses works botgh old and new that are some of the best of theater. They are innovative and the acting is invariably wonderful. I have been introduced to new works by writers previously unknown to me and borh new and traditional productions of plays by William Shakespeare. I attend a lot of theater, but none more versatile and none with better casts that those produced by Shakespeare & Co.

Our school has atteneded several presentations by Shakespeare & Company. They were always accomodating. Those instructors who attend plays on a regular basis commented to me that the productions are top notch. Our first year we wrote a grant to attend. Each year we have been able to take our students to see a live production of a shakespearian work. Something they may only see once in a lifetime.During the first two years we were stuck in traffic and the production company took a brief intermission so our students could see the second half of the play. But before they began an actor explained to our students what had happened to that point. The question and answer period after the play is great for our students as well as pre play booklet to discuss the background of the particular play we are going to see. We are glad that Shakespeare and company can offer such an outstanding theathrical experience at a modest rate for students from lower income populations.

I completed one of their monthlong acting intensives and it was transforming. It affirmed a lot of my notions of what constitutes a good performance and it helped me find and explore new, brutally honest and effective ways to portray Shakespearean characters. It helped me step into Shakespeare's world -- Renaissance England -- and make sense of the elements that used to puzzle me. I would gladly pay the money and do one again, and I intend to in a couple of years. The school's staff are gentle, kind and lovers of their work -- they have devoted their life to this work! A few years back we found that our daughters, now 12 and 10, had outgrown the children's theater at the Mac-Haydn so we attended The Ghost of Canterville at Shakespere & Co. instead. We were mesmerized and blown away by Michael Hammond's performance and all of the cast. Since then we have waited anxiously each season to get the schedule of events to see what we can attend at Shakespere & Co. The Hound of Baskervilles was our next adventure and I can not say enough about this performance! The four of us could not remember a time laughing so hard and long. It was an event we would have attended twice had we not gone on the last weekend showing. We became instant fans of Josh McCabe and Ryan Winkles, so when we saw Inspector Hound and The Mystery of Irma Vep advertised, there was no doubt that we would go and we were not disappointed! At that point I was blown away by the productions - they were so accessible to all audience members. Subsequently I attended two month-long training sessions and could not get enough of this incredibly powerful work. From there I trained with one of their faculty privately and started to help teach at the workshops. And finally I graduated to full faculty myself. Although it has been a few years since I have worked for the company I still believe it is the best place in North America to learn how to perform Shakespeare and their public productions lead the way in terms of how one continues to make Shakespeare accessible, relevant and fun for all. Berkshire residents and visitors are fortunate indeed to have Shakespeare & Company, one of the most creative and vital organizations in the area. My family has enjoyed S&Co productions for years, and my daughter has participated in the Riotous Youth summer camp for the past four years. Recently the year-round season has been a bonus as well. The abundance, scope, and variety of the offerings is astonishing: not only the Shakespeare plays but also lectures, original dramas, shows for children, programs in the high schools, and of course the summer camps. This is inspiration, enlightenment, and audience building of the highest order. I love to visit the campus on a typical summer day and watch the camp kids perform, see a clever and funny program in the Rose Footprint theater, catch the free show outside the Founders Theater, admire the gardens, join the crowd mingling in the lobby, and then be transported to another place and time at the evening performance. I only wish S&Co could find the funding to deal with the decaying buildings around the perimeter of the grounds.

In addition to the great theater performances for visitors and locals, Shakespeare and Co. runs and absolutely outstanding educational program. The "Fall Festival" has to be seen to be believed. Its crazy to think that anyone could get 100's of teenagers eagerly packing themselves into a theater, hooting and hollering for Shakespeare, but they do exactly that year-after-year. 10 regional high schools, each having worked under the direction of a S&Co director, come together for a long weekend of non-stop Shakespeare, showing off their efforts and cheering on the other schools. Its hard to imagine this working, but it does and admirably so.

I have been a patron of and donor to Shakespeare and Company for more than 20 years. Always entertaining, S & Co is also highly educational because of the content of its programming.
S & Co is unique in it's ability to appeal to all ages, not just thru the extensive presentation of the plays of William Shakespeare, but also a liberal program of hilarious farce. There is nothing more rewarding than to hear the gleeful laughter of childern at theatre which can also be throughly enjoyed at an intellectual level by adults. Immediate examples would be the current production of "The Mystery of Irma Vep", the upcoming revival of the 2009 "The Hound of the Baskervilles" or last season's "The Real Inspector Hound".
S & Co's outreach education programs are the delight of young people and their parents throughout our region. These involve productions produced by the company starring students, acting classes in regional schools, court imposed "sentences" to study Shakespeare as the result of juvenile delinquency, and this years 30th anniversary tour of a special S & Co production of "Hamlet", featuring only six actors playing all the roles, to over 50 schools throughout New York State, New Jersey and New England.
I cannot think of an organization more deserving of your consideration.

My weekend training experience was the single most effective training experience I have ever had, and I've been doing theater since I was ten years old. There were no complex theories, there were no embarrassing games. What there was, was a simple way of connecting the breath here and now with the text, a way to access not memory but emotion here and now. And although there are many excellent books on the subject, it was the well-trained, compassionate, intelligent actor who led the workshop that made this method useful. Through careful questioning, he arrived at exactly the right method for each of us to connect to the text, whether it was starting to talk at just the right emotional moment or running in circles until we had to use our breath. I'm still not sure how he did it, but I've never felt so good about myself or my craft as I did after this weekend.

I discovered Shakespeare & Co. about 5 years ago, after having lived in the region for 5 years and having heard about them. My first experience was a comedy (I can't remember which one) but it was absolutely superb. Since then I have made a point of making the trek down there at least once a season, and bringing as many friends and out-of-town guests as possible. I eagerly await the announcement of the new season, and it has become a summer family tradition for my son, now a "theater-type" in college. The comedies we have seen are side-splitting and unbelievably energetic; I can't say enough good things about the acting. The staging is usually spot-on as well, although there has been the occasional mismatch, usually when the company attempts to add bluegrass music or something like that. I have really enjoyed the productions by the interns in the new smaller space, too, for the past 3 seasons. Personally, I am not as big a fan of the non-Shakespeare productions I have seen by the company, but that may just be me. One suggestion: the company has a very generous reduced ticket rate for Berkshire County residents. Some of us in southern Vermont consider Shakespeare &Co local, and do come back again and again, but don't get to benefit from the discount even though we work in Berkshire County. To be honest, the economic situation in southern Vermont is at least as bad as in the less-advantaged towns in Berkshire County, and there are a lot of folks in my area who could never afford to see a single show. I wonder if a little outreach might be possible up here as well; the theater program in the public schools in Bennington is thriving and there are a lot of kids and families here who would feel like they had died and gone to heaven to be able to see one of your shows.

I was fortunate enough to participate in a summer institute with Shakespeare & Co. on the teaching of Shakespeare in the classroom. The instructors excellent and of the highest quality and provided me with superior tools to take back to my classroom.

While at the institute, I was privileged to attend many performances at the various theaters on the Shakespeare & Co. campus in Lenox, MA. The quality of each performance was superior.

I highly recommend Shakespeare & Co.

When my daughter was in eighth grade, and losing interest in education, Shakespeare and Co. came to her school to present MacBeth, both by getting each student involved in performing scenes, and by showing them what it would be in theri own lives today. The actors who came, caught the imagination and involvement of the students, and they became quite interested in Shakespeare in general. Ten years later, she still remembers MacBeth, and has attended other Shakespeare performances.
My other daughter, who was an active student, chose to take her friends to Shakespeare and Co. for her 17th birthday. We had a picnic on the lawn, and enjoyed a show. This is a wonderful organization.

My first experience with Shakespeare & Company came in the summer of 2008 as an audience member. I was so inspired by the work that I applied to and participated in the 2010 Winter Month-Long Intensive. This was the perfect complement to my MFA studies in acting. My confidence in Shakespeare grew tenfold. The personal attention I received was obviously built upon from years of expertise dealing with actors in continuous development. I opened up more than I had before in any such opportunity. I was then fortunate to be accepted as a Performance Intern for Summer 2010, performing in two shows and understudying a role in one main stage production. I was also awarded EMC points. Again, my confidence benefited.

Each year Shakespeare and Co. comes to my school and allows students to participate in their Fall Festival program. Most students, at first find it daunting, like myself- the prospect of performing Shakespeare is very intimidating. Once cast, and rehearsals began however, I soon realized the magic that this company has to offer the youth. It allows us to explore not only our strengths but our weaknesses and build upon both. We, as young adults and human beings are able to admit to our weaknesses and not necessarily "fix" them but rather improve upon them, work at them- that is what makes a strong human being. Someone who works hard for a cause, and Shakespeare and Company allows and enforces that in every single one of their cast members, even down to their techies.
My school did King Lear this year and the rehearsal process was extremely tough. We all knew this show was going to be a challenge from Stage 1 and we, including the directors, were ready to take it on. After some ups and downs during rehearsals we finally got to a place where we were steadily going up in the quality of our show. Two weeks before our show we had set, costumes, and lighting down and we were allowing people to come watch from the school community if they so desired. One girls' boyfriend who has the reputation of skipping class/school, not doing work, and messing up his life watched one rehearsal approached our directors and asked to be in it and in a heartbeat they were like "YES YES! We would LOVE for you to be a part of it!" Remember, this is TWO WEEKS before we went up. The night of our festival performance he told everyone in the cast that he is ready to make a change in his life. He quit smoking, cutting class, and he started doing his homework and reading books. This is a direct quote "I would never had made this change so late in my high school career if it hadn't been for Shakespeare. I wish i knew how cool this was when i was a freshman so I could get more people involved!"
Shakespeare and Company touches the souls of so many people, parents, students, teachers, the elderly etc. and it it truly amazing to see the growth and development of my peers during our involvement with this truly brilliant and inspiring company.

My daughter began participating in the Fall Festival of Shakespeare for the past two years. This program is invaluable to the students, parents, teachers involved in the program. every year 10 schools are involved. our school has 53 or more students participating. in our school that is 10% involvement; more than any single sports team. 10 of Shakespeare's plays are performed every year. school alternate their performances. a comedy one year, a tragedy or history the next. My daughter, who was shy and just wanted to be in the background began to come "out of her shell". She began to want to do speaking parts and to take on leadership roles in her school. Because of this program and it's immersion into shakespeare's writing and language she performed very well on her state exams which involved writing an essay comparing shakespeares Hamlet to another story.
Students who normally might not be in the same peer groups, for the duration of this program, are working together for 9 to 10 weeks to produce a play with the guidance of Shakespeare and Company, actors/ directors.
As a parent I am involved in costumes, transportation of students to the "tech days" at Shakespeare and Co. and chaperoning the cast to common classes during the weeks leading up to school and Fall Festival performances. I only wish that I had this wonderful program when I was in high school. Like another parent and friend said when we were introducing "new" parents to this program. "I wish I could be them!"

Subsequently, I participated in teacher trainings and brought Kevin Coleman to Children's Theatre of Charlotte to help train actors and classroom teachers involved in a Shakespeare touring and residency program I developed there.

Not a day goes by that I don't remember and use the knowledge and emotional understandings gained during that month and in the years following. This is an organization made up of a diverse corps of actors, directors, choreographers and teachers who genuinely speak from and live by a consistent aesthetic. They compassionately help people discover and uncover their own humanity through playing with Shakespeare's text, characters and stories. They allow us to do, to feel, to be and to live the human passion inherent in Shakespeare's plays. They are real. They care deeply about the work and have transformed lives all over the country.

I first encountered Shakespeare & Company in one of their four day teacher workshops in the late 1980's. Kevin Coleman, the instructor at the workshop, helped me understand how to help my high school students "play" with Shakespeare. My teacher colleagues and I were introduced to swordplay, Elizabethan dance, and the importance of the supporting actors in setting the context of a scene. I believe in their mission and have been a donor ever since. At least once a year, I make the trek from Connecticut up to Lennox for a show. I am working with my school district to bring their educational program to my high school. I was also impressed to learn about their program with the juvenile justice system in Western Massachusetts that engages young men in the production of a Shakespeare play in order to help them positivelyre-design their behaviors. Tina Packer founded the company based on the English model of a theater company where everyone does all of the jobs. This "democratic" operation policy is evident in the cheerful participation of the actors in such mundane off-stage jobs as handing out programs and house managing. I also enjoy the way they bring productions of Shakepeare into today's world. For example, during the porter's drunken speech in Macbeth, the actor ad-libbed some current political situations into his speech. Indeed, Shakespeare is a man for all times, as this wonderful company makes quite clear.

Without Shakespeare and Company's education programs, I would never have gained this much perspective on things like human language and how actions speak louder than words. I have gained many skills through Jon Croy's teaching that help me not only on stage, but in real life as well. Acting in general teaches you so much about yourself and others, but the Shakespeare and Company programs offer these teaching to such a great extent, it would be a terrible loss not to have that kind of experience and talent in our area. Dear Sol and Elayne,

By now you must wonder what became of these two wandering minstrels!

Well, they have been on quite an adventure since they left the glow of yours and their Grandma's company in Lenox. They have been to Woods Hole, Martha's Vineyard, and Provincetown. They have been
on a whale watch, and almost went water skiing. (They got dragged by a motor boat on a round rubber tube).

They came close to getting blown away by a hurricane, and now finally, they are on the end of Long Island for a few last sunny days with Dad (and mom) before school starts again.

But more important than where they were, it's what they did while there. Specifically, in Laurel Hollow, Long Island, they performed their monologues (along with their cousins, Josh and Kai) for a small audience on grass theater at a friend's beautiful home where they were videotaped. (Video tape to follow some day, I hope). They astounded three small children who had no idea what hit them. I think that's a big part of the fun. Kids who aren't exposed know not what to think. But it tells them: Hmm. Maybe there is something else out there!

All over Cape Cod they cursed at one another in Elizabethan style--usually beginning each sentence name with "Thou art...."
Thou was usually a boil.

During our escape from Hurricane Earl, Henry performed his monologue at my brother's home in Foxboro, Mass. during a big Chinese Food feast. This inspired my nice, Olivia Rose, age 11, to perform her scene from a play of Alice in Wonderland in which she was the Red Queen. Needless to say, my brother and his wife were astounded! They didn't know children could perform Shakespeare, and I don't even think they knew their daughter had starred in a play at sleep-away camp! They loved it!

I don't think the boys will ever forget their experience and Shakespeare and Company. Nor will they ever forget the fabulous, feisty, adoring couple who led them along--making them feel like they had come by special invitation. One time I saw Elayne reminding Henry to speak up and speak more slowly, and I thought how nice it would be if she could come home with us and appear each night at homework time: the perfect combination of encouragement and affection.

Gus's eyes lit up when we found out that his school is offering an after-school Shakespeare class, but was disappointed to find out
it's for kids in the two grades below him. But I know he will wow his teacher this year--especially if he is asked to write an essay
about how he spent his summer vacation. Can you imagine? And what a head start as he head for middle school. (Elayne--did you read The Wednesday Wars??)

Thanks most of all for being there for my mother-in-law. She made such a big commitment to the boys and to herself, and I am
absolutely positive that without your support--in so many ways--the two weeks would have been even more of a challenge
than they already were. Can you imagine taking on something like this? I'll bet you can. I think of the two of you, my mother-in-law, and the four boys as a small troop of intrepid actors--emerging from a little painted carnival wagon (they have one like this in The Wind in the Willows) in full costume--each with a different role--smiling at the audience, juggling, throwing out candies, and making everyone smile. Then performing a show. I think Josh would love this image more than anyone!

I hope you know how much we loved visiting both times we had the opportunity. First we had the perfect tour led by Sol, including ice cream for everyone, and a backstage look at Elayne's gorgeous theater, classrooms, props room, and costume studio!
I wanted to stay and take classes, myself. Truly.

And then the second time for the show--my parents were so impressed, my mom told me it was the highlight of her life. How about that?

Sol, Elayne: It truly is a remarkable program, and the two of you and my mother-in-law made it more than that--you made it feel like a home away from home. I think Henry would move there in a moment. He told me: "This is the greatest place ever, mom." Gus is the more dubious of the two, and even he said: "That camp is great."

I hope we will see you again. Maybe for dinner in the city? We would love to have you to brunch or dinner at our place on the Upper West Side. Or even better, wouldn't it be nice to see you back at camp next year? We may show up with our own troop if I keep telling everyone about it.

At any rate, I write this with appreciation for you both and for the great people who run the camp. It couldn't have been more exciting for my boys. A big, big thank you and a big, big hug.

Affectionately,

Jill Davis (mom of Gus and Henry)

Eleven years ago I became a volunteer at Shakespeare & Company; one of the best decisions I made in the use of my volunteer time. The members of this company are warm, friendly, outgoing. The permanent staff is so dedicated, working so many hours for a moderate salary. Many of the staff are also actors as this company follows the Elizabethan tradition in many ways, one of which is the actors not only perform but manage the company, too. If you have never seen a play performed here, and enjoy theatre, then you must see productions here. Not only are Shakespearan plays performed but also new plays or plays with a social message. Presently is The Mystery of Irma Vep. It is hilarious, the costume changes in themselves are worth seeing this show. I will never forget The Dreamer Examines the Pillow with JOhn Douglas Thompson in the summer of 2009. It was outstanding. The Berkshires is so fortunate to have this exceptional theatre located here.

My kids have been involved with the Fall Festival of Shakespeare for the last 4 years and it has helped, in a large part, in making them what they are today - which is confident, smart and capable.
The program is intense and thorough in studying and understanding the works, language and times of Shakespeare. The self-confidence that is gained by all the kids is nothing short of amazing.
The advantage that the in-depth education of Shakespeare's works gives these students in their regular studies in high school is indisputable. They do better on exams as reported by their teachers.
Our school is one of two in NY that participates in the Fall Festival of Shakespeare. We are proud to be part of the program.

My wife and I recently saw the Shakespeare & Company production of THE MYSTERY OF IRMA VEP. Charles Ludlum's truly ridiculous script was realized with the wit, energy and truthfulness that characterizes this remarkable company's work in Shakespeare as well as contemporary plays. Their Shakespeare productions are clear and humane. The kind of training that is at the heart of Shakespeare & Company's approach to all plays enables them to make the most complex scripts comprehensible and enjoyable..

I first encountered Shakespeare and company as a high school student. Members of their education team came into my school and worked with the English classes, exploring Shakespeare as performance. I also participated in their Fall Festival; an amazing opportunity for high school students to come together to perform Shakespeare's plays. I eventually introduced my whole family to Shakespeare and Company. They were amazed at how understandable and interesting Shakespeare could be in the hands of these talented actors. Shakespeare and Company provides an invaluable service to the community and to Massachusetts schools!

S&Co. brings so much to Berkshire County and beyond. Seeing the results of their outreach school program culminating in the Fall Festival is heartwarming in this era. Being a full time Berkshire resident, it is
wonderful to have theater all year. With smaller casts one gets to interact with the productions. Open rehearsals and discounted tickets to County residents are other winning factors. S&CO is generous in donating time and tickets to help other non-profits in their fundraising.
During the summer the place is wildly busy with a bucolic atmosphere, and something for all ages, often free. Other than the two main stages, Bankside, the Rose Footprint Stage is family and young actor friendly appealing in a madcap way to a diverse audience.
It is a no-brainer to support S&Co.

Both my children participated in the Shakespeare in the Schools program, both at the elementary level and in high school. It was one of their MOST important resources to help them fit into a school where the arts have suffered due to budget cuts. They made lifelong friends, were able to use language in new and exciting ways and I have seen the effects of this program on kids with esteem issues. I really admire the program the involves high risk teenagers empowered by what they can say and the attention they can get in life through participation in theater. I think Shakespeare & Co. has innovated new ways of making theater part of the life of Berkshire residents and all in a very economical, and cost effective way. The loss of this company or a reduction in their programs would effect kids and families at many economic levels throughout the county.

There is nothing like Shakespeare & Company, Inc. The Berkshires wouldn't be the Berkshires without this absolutely vibrant, dynamic, and community-minded organization. As a parent and a public school district employee, I have experienced first-hand the dedication of all of those involved in Shakespeare & Co. My daughter has taken par in Shakespeare & Company's Fall Festival program - an event that is totally in a class of its own. This program combines theater, literature, music, and a all out rock concert -- in one over the top event known as Shakespeare's Fall Festival. When you have a teen who begs you to be part of such an event--well then, Shakespeare & Co. is doing something right; actually, they do everything right. William Shakespeare must be looking down from the literary heavens nodding his approval! As far as constructive feedback goes, to be quite honest, the only comment I have is to expand programs. And to do so, more funding is needed. Shakespeare & Company, in the only way I believe Shakespeare & Company operates, is going full out in that area as well. Shakespeare & Company is an absolutely priceless program.

The talent and creativity of the troupe is a marvel to experience as each performance unfolds.
The major problem with the organization is to have it all and be able to afford it. I think it was the right move to purchase the facility in Lenox, but it was & continues to be costly to develop and maintain. More time & energy must be spent on fundraising, and that has to be a drain especially in today's economy. Keep up the good work.

There are not enough words to describe the consistently outstanding quality and delightful variety of productions at Shakespeare and Company …year after year after year. The Summer program with productions like Women of Will are as educational as they are brilliant and there is more learning to be had in that program’s 15 hour marathon than many of us absorbed in four college years studying classical theater. The creative genius and fiery courage of Tina Packer lives on in the company as she continues to share her vast knowledge and well-honed skills as a director, as an actor, as an educator and as a mentor for new, young talent. What a privilege to watch her inspire so many from the ambitious youth programs led by the inexhaustible and dedicated Kevin Coleman to her very loyal following with the highly educated retired community in the Berkshires. And to watch the magnificence of John Douglas Thompson in an intimate Berkshire setting is something no wise soul should ever miss or take for granted. And then there are the new plays that are born in this magical setting like THE TASTER which is probably the most moving and most delicate piece of theater since maybe….THE GLASS MENAGERIE. What lovely surprises are in store for every one of us when we buy a ticket and watch this ambitious company with its rollicking energy continue to delight us. They’re the best in the business and they love what they do. What a gift they are and how very honored we are to support them.

Shakespeare & Company is transformative in the way it makes the work of William Shakespeare speak to a modern audience. They use the power of language and very strong production values.

What makes this company remarkable is that many of the people both onstage and off have been around for a very long time, some even since the company's inception in 1978.

I have designed for the company since 1991, finding my feet as a young designer with the company. I consider Shakespeare & Company as my primary training ground and have since gone on to design for Broadway, Off-Broadway, television, independent film, opera, Regional theatre, Higher Education and dance. My work has received critical praise from national publications such as Variety Magazine, The New York Times, The Boston Globe and the Wall Street Journal, among many others.

While the company could improve their craft by having more of the core members participate in the industry of performing arts that exixt outisde of Shakespeare & Company, my experience there has, and continues to be, a great opportunity to improve my skills as a designer.

Plus, the festival atmosphere with students rooting for students in other schools was unlike anything I have seen before. It was truly a heartening experience.

Shakespeare & Company is a vital part of that cultural realm. Shakespeare & Company in Lenox is well known in the Northeast as being a place to see some of the best Shakespearean shows in the region, as well as in the country. I learned a lot about Shakespeare the writer, learned a lot about the canon of plays, (especially the rarely done histories) and was amazed at the acting. Shakespeare & Co. provides a terrific mix of Shakespearean drama and comedy, plays by other writers, and educational programs that extend beyond their home base in Lenox (I am going to be working at an upcoming school-audience presentation of their Hamlet in upstate New York). Some of their events are free, which is important to community access; in fact, one of their most moving is their now-annual July 4 reading on the lawn of the Declaration of Independence. I especially enjoy their secondary theater which puts the audience nearly onstage with the actors. The Mystery of Irma Vep, featuring the multitalents (including beautiful singing in falsetto) of Josh Aaron McCabe and Ryan Winkles, was all the funnier because, even from so very up close, all those costume/character changes were brilliant. I must add that during the summer, it is lovely to see the casts and crew around town, at times rehearsing their lines as if in ordinary conversation; they live and breathe their art, they aren't just there for a gig. All in all, this company is a valuable community and cultural resource as well as a world-class training ground for actors of the future.

My children found their voices largely because of involvement with Shakespeare and Company's programs. The company is a regular part of our public school, providing direction and resources for our middle school and high school theater programs. Through their indispensable Fall Festival of Shakespeare program, they bring hundreds of children from different schools and different ages and all different backgrounds together in a nurturing, creative, cooperative environment. They have helped thousands to learn to love the arts and language, to give themselves fully and joyfully to a passion, to speak comfortably and clearly in front of people, to work under pressure, to delve deeper and work harder than they ever have before, to gain a deep sense of satisfaction from work well done, to deal with disappointment when things don't go according to plan, to prepare, to improvise, to think on the spot, to evaluate, and to redouble effort. I have been involved with S&co's student programs since fourth grade. I was terribly shy, and convinced I had stage fright, but Shakespeare gave me a chance to stage fight with legs of lamb and come out of my shell. Not only did S&co improve my acting, it changed the way I think about things. At Fall Festival, I got to watch teenagers from different places come together and genuinely celebrate language. Shakespeare has a tradition called "check-in" during which each person at rehearsals gets to say how he or she is feeling. The chance to be listened to, unconditionally, is indispensable for the health of an adolescent mind. S&co's environment is beautiful and valuable, and it's employees deserve all the help they can get.

As a parent whose children worked and played with Shakespeare & Co. for a total of 18 years, I am filled with gratitude and awe toward this extraordinary Education program. It pushes far beyond the envelope of "theatre company" by truly transforming kids' lives. It seizes their imaginations and awakens their spirits. It gives them the words to understand their emotions and the voice to express them. It challenges them to be big. It teaches them to listen and to trust. It gives them a family of kindred spirits, within their school and beyond. It lets them attack complex texts with aplomb. It provides a lifeline to help navigate adolescence -- especially critical for boys. And it instills lifelong values of support, trust, and listening to their own hearts. I simply wish every teenager could have this experience.

The training I received at Shakespeare & Company's month-long intensive was life-changing. I truly learned what the meaning and importance of having both craftsmanship and GUTS in acting - and that Shakespeare is not a language to "reach at" but poetry to let flow through you! The program also heightened my perceptions and sense of accountability of my actions and feelings and how they can affect others. It was exactly what I needed, trainingwise - I balked at being indebted thousands of dollars from graduate programs, the pacing and material and teaching style at the month-long intensive was perfect for where I was with my actor training needs. Life changing.

As an actor getting back on the boards after having a baby, I needed to immerse myself in an artistic training experience. Shakespeare & Co.'s weekend intensive was more than I could ask for.

Set on their extraordinary campus, the four days of training tapped my strengths and potential, challenged me, and made me feel alive as an artist. Dennis Krausnick, especially, guided me to inner resources that had only just simmered in the past.

I reconnected with myself and with my art. I don't think it's a coincidence that I have been working steadily ever since I took the acting workshop two years ago.

Shakespeare & Co. offer something valuable to their community, which extends far beyond the Berkshires. They offer beautiful theatre, yes, but their emphasis on training and development helps to make them a leading contributor to THEATRE in this country.

I'm Essy Dean & this original appeared in the November 2010 issue of the Monterey News & the November 2010 issue of The Bold Eagle, the Mount Everett Student Newspaper

The ripple of 500 excited students has run through the halls of Founder’s Theatre and out the doors into the general public of Massachusetts and New York State every year for the past twenty-one years.
“Fall Festival rocks,” says former student Nina Scibelli, who now attends Bard College at Simon’s Rock.
Fall Festival started when Shakespeare & Company was doing residencies at only Lenox Memorial High School and Mt. Greylock Regional High School.
When asked about the founding of Fall Festival two years ago, Kevin Coleman, Director of Education said: “The idea started when Lenox and Mt. Greylock were both staging Shakespeare plays.” The two shows were performed back-to-back and transformed from those two schools into what is now known as Fall Festival of Shakespeare.
Shakespeare & Company, which is up in Lenox, MA, decided that they should sponsor a program that was uncompetitive and fun for everyone. It has been a success and now every year, the weekend before Thanksgiving ten schools located in Massachusetts and New York State come to Shakespeare & Company in Lenox and perform their plays for Shakespeare & Company, the other nine schools, their friends and family and the local community. Auditions took place in late September and now the cast, crew and directors can’t wait to be the show-offs for two nights.
“Fall Festival is basically the highlight of my year.” Says Mount Everett senior Zoe Laiz. “Mt. Everett is so lucky in that high schoolers and middle schoolers alike can audition. The Fall Festival is a big community- maybe even family- that is supportive, fun and really welcoming. And believe it or not, Shakespeare is way cooler than you might think.”
This year Mount Everett Regional High School performed Much Ado About Nothing.
“Shakespeare & Co. in general has done an amazing job in making Shakespeare's text fun and alive for anyone who is willing to try.” Says Mount Everett senior Kayla Alden. “The knowledge, the experience, and the abilities I have gained because of Fall Festival are tools that I will be able to use for the rest of my life.”

Performances we have had the privilege of attending were remarkable and showcased so many students talents. I have admired and supported this amazing asset to the cultural world for a number of years. It's unique style of actors sharing administrative work of the organization while honing their impressive artistic skills has created a rare responsiveness. Far reaching vision and standards combined with practical experience is what this group of fine artists is about. Add to that, the grounding created by teaching each other and their peers as well as the new generation of young people, makes for teamwork that is unsurpassed. No wonder their artistic work is world renowned and each production a revelation.

In addition, they have developed beautiful property which had been abandoned, right in the center of Lenox, MA. It has become alive, a stunning setting for all citizens and visitors to enjoy the delight of first-class theatre in imaginative programs.

Shakespeare and Company has been an important part of my and my family's life for the past 32 plus years. From the very first performance of Midsummer Night's Dream at the Mount we knew we had connected with something very magical. It is so rare to find Shakespeare performed in such a way that everyone who attends totally understands what is being said. You can see the meaning of each word in the actor's toes. I think if you were deaf you would be transported. I have taken the intensive training three times over the past thirty years and each time brought home gifts for my life as well as my art. Shakespeare and Company has fed my body, mind and soul. What more could you ask from any organization.

Shakespeare & Company is an invaluable resource for our community. Not only do they perform the great plays of Shakespeare, as well as those of contemporary playwrights, but they also play a great part in bringing Shakespeare to the schools in our area. The school I work at, Berkshire Montessori, each year performs a condensed version of one of Shakespeare's plays, under the direction of a Shakespeare & Co. employee. And every Fall they send their people out to many high schools in Berkshire County, MA, and Columbia County, NY, to direct the young people in some of the best theatrical productions I've ever seen at the secondary school level.

Shakespeare & Co. also makes their costume wardrobe available for an event our Montessori elementary students put on every year. We call it the "Historical Dinner". Each student researches a person who is important in history, makes a mannekin representing that person, dressed in an appropriate costume from S&Co. These figures are then seated around tables as if at a dinner party, tablemates having been chosen based on common attributes of the historical persons. (Thus, last year Saddam Husein sat by himself, dressed in a fine military uniform from S&Co, because the students felt he would have nothing in common with other historical figures like Lincoln or Ghandi.)

The training is exceptional, the staff amazing, generous and kind, and the productions are top-notch. I have personally attended two month long actor intensives, and several other educational programs over the years. There is nothing that compares to their training in the region, and I encourage all the actors I know to travel to MA and experience it for themselves. They are even recommended as the "place to train" by famous British actors! The state of MA is very fortunate to be "home" to Shakespeare & Company, and I continue to travel every year from CT to visit and enjoy the productions.
In summary, they are a gem, so please make sure to continue to support them so they thrive!

Shakespeare & Co. is an amazing company that not only presents beautifully directed, acted, and staged Shakespeare plays, but also presents new works and adaptations of classic and comtemporary literature. I've become more and more committed to this company and try to see as many of their productions as I can.

Among its particular strengths are: actors who really know how to handle Shakespearean language; directors who are brilliant at finding the humor in Shakespeare (and not just polite smiles, but all-consuming laughter that leaves you gasping for breath); gorgeous costumes; one-person and small-cast plays that showcase particular talents; at least one just-for-fun play each year; and loads of opportunities to learn more about Shakespeare and his world in free presentations.

This year, I attended "Women of Will," in which Tina Packer (the company's founder) and Nigel Gore acted and discussed scenes that revealed Shakespeare's evolving portrayal of women in his plays. Also saw "Richard III," and chatted about it with a visitor from England who said it was probably one of the best productions of the play she'd ever seen. Another highlight was "The Taster," written by regional playwright Joan Ackerman, an incredibly moving piece with parallel story lines set in the middle ages and contemporary time.

I could go on at length, but I finally want to mention the work Shakespeare & Co. does with regional high schools, staging an annual festival in which each school presents its own production of a Shakespeare play. I have had the chance to see some of these productions, and the students' work and the degree to which they become devoted to the effort are quite extraordinary.

The financial problems that have plagued the company in recent years are being addressed and corrected with additional professional leadership. I hope these changes will guarantee Shakespeare & Co's survival.

But the best thing about the company in my experience is their Fall Festival program for high school students. Shakespeare & Co. brings the highest level of theater to our area -- their productions are usually top-notch, and always worth seeing. They really know how to bring Shakespeare to life. In addition, the many additional programs (some of which are free), such as non-Shakespeare plays, lectures, and in particular their summer classes on Shakespeare for kids, are wonderful. My granddaughter, who lives in Lenox, has attended their week-long Shakespeare camp and at the age of 9 is a devoted "fan" of Shakespeare's works! She even sat through the entire production of "Richard II", completely enthralled, even though one could hardly call it a play for children! The warm, welcoming and informal atmosphere at the Shakespeare & Co. "campus" makes it a great place to picnic, and just to hang out. I managed to convince my 14 year old son to give Shakespeare a fair try at Shakespeare & Company's production of Hamlet. I had never attended an S&C performance but had heard many great reviews. I had high hopes that S&C would be able to show him how exciting Shakespeare could be - and boy did they deliver! The pre-show production of the very funny "Omlett, Prince of Breakfast" and a snack on the terrace made for a great warm-up to the main event. A child of the flash and fluff digital age, my son was taken by the stark Founder's theater. He noted that the actors didn't have elaborate sets or special effects to "cover for them". Simplicty and pure acting - imagine that! The performance was amazing as critics more knowledgable than I could tell you. As a mom, seeing my son leaning forward elbows on knees in anticipation during the performace was more than worth the price of admission. We'll be back for more this summer - at my son's request!

Over 20 years ago I helped Shakespeare & Company start a training program for high school teachers of Shakespeare. The program is still going. I am not an actor, but I have done S&Co;'s actor training program, and helped to modify it so we could teach it to high school teachers. Recently, I landed a part in a local production of 12th Night. The training I had 20 years ago was still there -- I was able to dive into the part, understand what Maria was saying, and communicate that to my fellow actors and to the audience. Shakespeare shouldn't be relegated to the high brow, to the library stacks, to some intellectual exercise. S&Co;brings Shakespeare alive; they have an extraordinary and lasting influence on students, on audiences, on actors. I have continued to support S&Co;since my first involvement in 1988 because the work they do can and does change the way people relate to literature, to themselves, to others. I applied to the Conservatory at Shakespeare and Company, hoping for a truly intensive experience in which I would be challenged to discover new depths in my voice, physicality, and overall connection to the text. My hopes were answered tenfold. The growth of my voice itself, and awareness of my vocal potential was shocking. The individual time spent with my instructors extensive, and their genuine desire to help me grow as an artist was immense, and many times, truly touching. I feel very lucky to have spent time learning from, and growing with Dennis and Clare specifically. The weakest component of my experience was relatively minor-- at times, a lack of organization. I believe this to be a general result of the difficulties of the company as a whole, at the moment. I struggled with defining roles of the staff (as I feel, the staff itself did as well) and think Conservatory classes in the future would benefit from having separate company managers and stage managers. I understand that the current situation is most likely due to issues with financial constraints which ended up trumping functionality. My only other complaint would be that I felt a general distaste for our class while among the rest of the company. This is most likely due to the less than desirable behavior of several of my Conservatory peers, however I was frustrated that their reputation colored mine in the eyes of the company. I'm disappointed that I feel like many times I was not treated with respect, as I think my behavior and work ethic were deserving of much more. Overall, my time with Shakespeare and Company was immensely pleasant and rewarding. I now enter auditions, and approach text (both classical and contemporary) with a new feeling of confidence and capability. Training with Shakespeare and Company has been (and I'm sure will prove to be even further in the future) the single most rewarding training I've pursued thus far. I very much hope to work with them again in the near future, as I greatly admire and respect the ethic and care with which they approach their craft.

We have seen three plays at Shakespeare and Company and have been impressed each time by this troupe's professional and inspired performances. The theatre is welcoming and comfortable, the acoustics are very good, there is not a bad seat in the house, the ticket prices are reasonable, and the drive through the Berkshires is beautiful. We live just outside Springfield, MA and can be at the theatre in less than an hour. On the first occasion, just my husband and I attended and it made for a really nice date. We brought our children to both the other plays we have seen and that too was enjoyable. For children (or adults who would like a quick refresher on Shakespeare), I would recommend Tina Packer's book, "Tales from Shakespeare." This book not only provides useful summaries but also includes wonderful illustrations. We borrowed "Tales From Shakespeare" from our local library before taking our girls (then aged 7 and 9) to see "A Midsummer Night's Dream." They were able to follow along without a problem and enjoyed the play as much as we did. They also liked the book so much that we have since purchased our own copy. As for taking children to the theatre, it has been fun and memorable for us and for our girls and I would recommend it (depending on the play, naturally, and of course upon the children!) We have only seen Shakespeare's plays at Shakespeare and Company and though I know they have other offerings and programs, I can't comment on any of that. I would wager, based upon the quality of what we have experienced, that it's all very, very good.

This is Shakespeare as it was meant to be -- alive and approachable -- and performed with humor, passion and exuberance. And don't forget the "& Company" part: from "Shirley Valentine" to Pinter one-acts to a manic, comic rendering of "The Hound of the Baskervilles," this is consistently high-quality and creative live theater in an intimate setting. The talent is second to none; it's great to be able to see such actors as the incomparable Tina Packer (founding Artistic Director of Shakespeare & Co.), John Douglas Thompson (acclaimed for his Othello and many other roles here and in New York), Elizabeth Aspenlieder (winner of a 2009 Elliot Norton Award for her one-woman show "Bad Dates" ) and so many other talented and appealing resident and visiting actors. The commitment of everyone associated with Shakespeare & Company -- the actors, directors, costumers, volunteers -- is palpable, and infectious. You become more than an audience member -- you begin to feel like you are part of this great project, simply by being present. And the park-like campus adds to the feeling that you are in a lovely world apart, even if only for a few hours at a time. There is something very moving about witnessing firsthand the creative drive of this wonderful company. We feel very fortunate to have Shakespeare & Company in our lives.

The Shakespeare and Company Month-Long Intensive was one of the most transformative expieriences of my life thus far. We learned the techniques and the lessons of course, but there was so much more involved- we learned about ourselves and how to take that knowledge and put it into our work. And I left with the knowledge that the lessons learned at Shakes and Co would continue to grow and change and effect me in different ways for months and years to come. It was the begining of what I hope is a journey of life long learning about myself, the human expierience, acting, Shakespeare and what it means to be alive. I am only begining to understand the depth of what I was taught and I hope very much to have further expieriences with this company to continue a realtionship with that fasinating, inspiring, and open group of people.

The training at Shakespeare & Co. is a wonderful, intense immersion in the words of Shakespeare and a deepening of one's own work no matter what level one is on. Personally, it was the best way to re-charge my focus and career as a professional actor. Seeing my teachers on stage the summer after my training during the First Folio workshop made me wish I lived closer to Massachusetts so I could see all the Shakespeare & Co. productions. I saw seven productions and one was more spectacular than the last. The comedies were hysterically funny and Hamlet was scary, moving...Great designs and terrific acting.

We saw the Shakespeare & Company production of "Les Liaisons Dangereuses" last night and thought it was excellent. The acting was superb and the entire production was well executed and highly professional - noticeably above the usual standards for all too many companies staging shows in local theaters. We were very impressed, and despite the fact that we drove an hour each way to get there (we came in from Albany, N.Y.), we would definitely go back. I imagine this theatre group must be a great resource for the region, especially because out-of-towners like us spend money at other local businesses while we're there to see the play (for example, we got dinner and drinks in Great Barrington, MA before the show).

After 10 years of taking acting classes and getting my BFA at NYU I was still blown away by how much I learned at Shakespeare & Company. Their acting technique is rich, innovative and, most importantly, effective. Throughout the entire intensive I was continually surprised by how the teachers could awaken such honest, fresh and visceral performances out of their students. When I went into their intensive they chose the perfect role for me to play. One that seemed at odds with my personality but in another way it fit me perfectly and allowed me to express and work through the fears and frustrations I was experiencing in my life. Through their acting training I was able to regain confidence and direction, not just in my acting skills, but in my life. The strongest criticism I have for the company is that their living facilities could use an upgrade (i.e. better heating, better water heaters) and I wish they could tour more because it's difficult to get out to their theater without a car. I also would have preferred a more challenging dance course but most of the other students had less dance experience and seemed quite happy with it.

I brought five of my high school theatre students to a performance of Romeo and Juliet last spring. Having explored exercises in physical movement, voice, text analysis, character development, delivery, rhythm, etc., my students were armed with the skills to fully appreciate and understand any Shakespearean play. We were all completely impressed with the vitality and integrity of this performance. The minimal set only served to enhance individual performances -- these actors obviously loved what they were doing.

I have had a chance to study with great professors. If I saw Nicole Williamson in Hamlet in high school, it was not until my late twenties that my ear was open enough to hear Shakespeare's words to my core. "Shakespeare and Company's" dramatizations of the history plays were fantastic. Second only to Oxford in the summer! We need to be able to see "Hamlet" and "Othello," "As You Like It" and "Measure for Measure." We need modern and contemporary theatre coupled as they do - theatre moving towards spectacle, as it was means to be.

Every parent looks for ways to enrich their children's lives, and when my sons were 8 and 10, my gut told me that Shakespeare and Company's upcoming production of "The Comedy of Errors" scheduled for the Barn at The Mount was exactly the intro they needed to The Bard's work. We picked them up from an overnight visit with their aunt and uncle and on the hour-long drive from Albany to Lenox, all they did was complain that they only wanted to go home and see their dog, not some dumb play. I quelled my misgivings (were they too young? would they make a scene in the audience? what if, heaven forbid, they just didn't get it?) by telling them it was a comedy and they'd laugh. During the opening scenes where the father recounts the tragic loss of his son, my 8-year-old leaned over to employ the kind of sarcasm a mother dreads. "You said this was a comedy," he practically sneered in something too close to a stage whisper. "It is," I insisted, hoping that my own memory of having seen this as a teenager wasn't faulty. Soon, though, the all-woman cast portraying long-lost identical twins worked their magic, and when one of the Dromios ran up the stairs, jumped into my husband's lap and begged for protection, my sons were won over. That was 10 years ago. We still quote a phrase from that show in our house and periodically recite our "life list" of Shakespeare plays we've seen. One of our older son's best college interviews was when he could talk about Henry V's "Band of Brothers" speech, and the 8-year-old who was so skeptical of the Bard played Touchstone in "As You Like It" at his high school this year. We know that each show we see at Shakespeare and Company will inform us, awe us and prove a great day out. We love to bring a picnic and eat on the lovely grounds before a show, catch the always-amusing preludes, and settle in to our seats with an anticipation rare and delightful. Our children are leaving the nest, and we owe Shakespeare and Company two large debts. One for enriching their lives beyond measure; the other for providing us with a set of memories that will warm us, make us laugh, and make us think for the rest of our lives.

We are hooked! Our first experience with Shakespeare & Company came in 2005 when we went to see "King John" after reading a review in a Berkshire newspaper. It was one of the most delightful theater experiences ever! We sat in the front row (could have put our feet up on the stage!) and were mesmerized. I gushed to my friends that I had witnessed more sword fights in that one night than I had ever in my life up to that point. The performances never disappoint. We always come away with at least one specific memory, be it the twigs in Mad Cordelia's hair in "Hamlet", the full bodied sinister portrayal of Iago in "Othello", the thrower lights from "Midsummer Night's Dream" or the delivery of the line from "As You Like It" (Rosalind pursuing Orlando in quest of marriage) "What do you say?" The non-Shakespeare plays are equally enthralling. "The Hound of the Baskervilles" is Broadway worthy. We would have seen it more than once had we the time. We even took in the tour. Loved the costume and props shops!

Six years ago I came as an audience member to see my first full season of plays at Shakespeare & Company. I've not only returned to see every season since, but have also participated in a range of their actor training programs, including the month-long intensive, the cornerstone of their training. My training at Shakespeare & Co. has been the most deeply rewarding and important actor training I've had in my life, profoundly changing my sense of the relationship between performer and audience as an actor and as a playwright. The theatrical production I've seen there, including the many in the new Bernstein space, continue to excite and inspire me as a lover of theater and Shakespeare and as an artist. I've taken three of my teenage nieces to see plays in the Fall Festival, and these were important experiences for them as young people being introduced to Shakespeare by their own peers. The Shakespeare in the Courts program is another impressive and important part of the work they do. Truly one of the most vital and exciting theater companies on the East Coast, if not in the country.

I have participated in Shake and Co's student programs since fourth grade, and I have had only positive experiences with them. Shake and Co's Fall Festival is an interscholastic high school Shakespeare program in which each of ten schools performs its own adaptation of a Shakespeare play. The directors are Shake and Co actors, and they use a question-based form of direction that allows students (such as myself) to develop their own ideas about the text and to feel a real ownership of the final performance. Fall Festival creates an incredibly positive environment--more safe and comfortable than sports teams, athletic clubs, or other theater programs I've been in. During "Check-In" at the beginning of class each day, each person expresses his or her mental state in order to release mental baggage. At the end, we "reinforce" a positive experience from the day. Fall Festival has brought me closer to talented older students, offered friendships with students from other schools, and helped me grow (in my acting, in reading, in speaking in front of people, in personality, and in happiness). Fall Festival performance weekend sees each school perform for the other participants, and high schoolers (members of an age group that often scorns Shakespeare) cheer for heroes, hiss at villains, and give each and every play a standing ovation. Other acting classes I've taken have offered the same experience. Shake and Co also performs high-quality plays by the Bard and other playwrites, which I have often enjoyed.

The care and detail that the company provides to create a memorable experience begins from the moment you enter the grounds (now at a splendid estate next to Tanglewood.) You may buy a ticket to see a certain play but you get the added experience of meeting actors, technical crew or students engaged in rehearsals, training sessions, or just lunch. A short chat with any member of this troupe reveals pride and excitement about the next event to be performed on that day - the play, an unexpected pre-show scene from an acting class or a free 'tent' show illuminating some aspect of Shakespeare's world in a most entertaining manner. Forget the circus - run away for a day or two in the Berkshires with Shakespeare and Company.

I trained and then taught with the Education Program in the early part of the 2000s. Subsequently I went back to graduate school for education and started my own freelance teaching artistry consultancy using some of the skills I gained @ S&Co;and the foundational aesthetic I learned from the core company members. I now serve about 300 students (of various SESes) directly a year and indirectly through use of my curricular materials, audience participation in performances I direct and take on tour with my students and collaborations with other organizations I serve an additional 2-3,000 children. The Education program develops the audiences and professionals of the future. Not to mention fills a gap in our education system left by standards based curriculums. Shakespeare & Company's Education program allows student participants the opportunity to develop, strengthen and hone 21st century learning skills vital to the future of our intellectual economy. Decision making, collaboration, problem-solving - many of these skills fall behind in the drive to gain rote knowledge to pass MCAS and other standards based tests. I wish there was more of an opportunity to work and collaborate with the lead trainers of the Ed Program and that I could co-teach with them more often. Because of budget cuts a lot of the hires are novices in the field (as I was! Which is a great thing for training!) but the number of long term staff seems to be much lower as they can't afford to pay to retain staff for the Ed programs. The dynamic of a lead teacher and a follow dog is mentorship at its most essential, to lose this, we lose a basic element of the training and of the teaching. I also have heard (through the teacher grapevine) that some of the schools programs are not as strong as they once were b/c of this issue. Funding for the Education program to hire and/or retain their senior staff and mid-level staff would be money well spent. The people who work here are full of passion and do more work for less money than a lot of theatre companies I have collaborated with... it pays dividends in the experience of the student and teacher participants and in the development of the next generation of brilliant teaching artists who in turn will impact even more children... and consequently our economy and our democracy.

My wife and I have just seen AS YOU LIKE IT and THE TEMPEST at BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music), part of the Bridge Project, directed by Sam Mendes. My wife said that AS YOU LIKE IT was the best performance of Shakespeare she had ever seen. I thought THE TEMPEST was the best of that play that I had ever seen. I mention BAM because my wife and I always spend at least one Summer weekend at Tanglewood to hear Levine (and his predecessors) and the Boston Symphony (we live in Philadelphia, so it's not like we just drop over), and for the past 6 or 7 years we have also added Shakespeare & Company to what we go to hear in the Tanglewood area. Memorable Shakespeare performances that come to mind are A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM (hilarious) and OTHELLO (very, very powerful), but there are others. Like great music, Shakespeare must be performed at the highest level to be appreciated, and, like the Bridge Project, Shakespeare & Company perform at that level. If you love Shakespeare, Shakespeare & Company is a must, not a maybe.

William Shakespeare himself would give a standing ovation to the plays presented by Shakespeare & Co. I first happened upon a Shakespeare & Co. performance in July 1999 while traveling in the Berkshires. The play was Richard III, and I was enthralled by director Tina Packer's revival of the lamentation rituals of women. There were many notable performances in the play, not the least of which was Jonathan Epstein in the title role. I was hooked, and now I try never to miss a Shakespeare play presented by this dynamic company. Energy, enthusiasm, and talent are evident in every production, and the Shakespeare plays presented by Shakespeare & Co. are always head and shoulders above productions I've seen elsewhere. The Shakespeare & Co. artists give new meaning to the words penned by Shakespeare more than 300 hundred years ago. In 2002 Tina Packer directed Macbeth because of the traumatic events that occurred the year before. Her hope was to understand why people perpetrate violence on others and to discover the role that actors play in the desire for power and dominance. Although the play is a tragedy, laughter makes it bearable. To this day I still chuckle when recalling Michael Hammond’s depiction of the Porter in this otherwise very serious, tragic play. At Shakespeare & Co. the artists' vitality and love of Shakespeare is evident not only in the words they speak but also in their facial expressions and body language. The company also has an education program that brings the poetry of Shakespeare to students through performances and workshops. I've seen Shakespeare and the Language that Shaped a World (SLAW) three times and plan to see it again. SLAW is a delightful combination of historical information and brief scenes from Shakespeare's plays. It includes music and sword-play, is fast-paced, and is a great introduction to one of the world's greatest authors. If you are in the Berkshires, be sure to see a performance by the Shakespeare & Co. artists. If you aren't in the Berkshires, make a special trip. You won't regret it.

Their theatre space is excellent- there really isn't a bad seat in the house. Shakespeare & Company does a wonderful job with physical comedy, especially when it comes to using the trap doors for comic effect. Their Comedy of Errors and Taming of the Shrew were two of the finest performances I've ever seen of those plays. Unfortunately, when it comes to drama, the idiosyncratic delivery promoted by Tina Packer yields very uneven results. I have seen plays, for example King John, where a number of individual scenes are very interesting in themselves, but they stop the flow of the play so that the overall viewing experience becomes insufferable. Inject this overwrought acting into a delicate comedy such as As You Like It or Much Ado About Nothing, and you have a real failure on your hands- at least, that was my experience. Overall, Shakespeare & Company is worth attending, but I've learned to pick and choose my shows.

We visit the Berkshires every summer and would not miss Shakespeare and Company for any reason. Their old venue at Edith Wharton's home The Mount provided excellent spaces for intimate plays as well as a natural ampitheater for large productions. There are some that stand out... first, a three person play called "The Aspern Papers" in Mrs. Wharton's drawing room; the stables productions like "Two Gentlemen of Verona," "Laughing Wild," and "Good Night Juliet, Good Morning Desdemona" (or was that the other way around?); and third, a lavish production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" in which the Pyramus and Thisbe play-within-a-play made me laugh so hard that my husband was afraid I would induce labor. The current digs are far more civilized; no more porta-potties, thank goodness; although I do miss Spring Lawn. I saw a riotously funny rendition of "Lettice and Lovage" there that I will never forget. In recent years, there has been some repetition of previous productions, and since we saw the originals, we have been less attend less often, but we did see a simply delightful "Twelfth Night" last summer, so it shows that the possibilities are still there. Neither my husband not I has been moved by any of the productions in the small theater; the Founder's is where to go to see something worthwhile.

My experience with Shakespeare & Company has been nothing but positive, from pre-show talks to high quality performances to their back stage tour, they are always of the highest quality, well-informed and creative. Though I only spen about a week in the Berkshires each year (where they are located),I usually try to pack in about three performances. Both the Shakespeare and their contemporary works are thought-provoking, honest, and frankly, fun!

The theatre experiences I have had at Shakespeare & Company have always been energizing and stimulating. Yet my strongest admiration and respect is given to their education programs that bring passion and intellect, emotion and insight to the teachers and students alike who take part in their workshops and institutes. What I was able to take back to my classroom after their sessions not only energized my teaching techniques, enthused my students, and brought Shakespeare's texts alive in very joyous and active ways, but also helped me reach the very human and very imaginative parts of their psyche. Our school is currently feeling the $$$ crimp and we substituted a less expensive, local theatre group for one day's work on Macbeth and felt the difference. Currently directing The Laramie Project, I'm using some of their techniques in helping students find emotional centers for their characters. Shakespeare & Co. has been invaluable for me as a teacher and as an individual. It provides everything that good theatre practice should--and that's far more than just entertaininment.

Shakespeare & Company is by far the most inspiring company that I have ever worked with. They consistently bring together the most talented and passionate people in their fields to create vital pieces of theatre. In particular, the volunteers that donate their time to this company, do so with joy and passion that is unsurpassed by any other company I have worked with. All together, the experience of working there is essential to my (and many others') growth as an artist and a human being.

This past fall, 2009, was the first time I attended Shakespeare & Company's Fall Festival of Shakespeare. I'd known that the organization had a history of working in high schools, but until this past fall, I hadn't seen for myself the impact that the organization makes on teenagers. What a treat to be in an audience of _Romeo and Juliet_ and see dozens of teenagers truly transfixed by watching their classmates on stage. And what was going on on stage was a remarkable display of creativity--making the story come alive.

This was a fantastic month-long Shakespeare Intensive, and truly deserving of the name "Intensive". Classes went from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. 6 days a week. Even though I had previously trained in Linklater, Alexander and other techniques which Shakes & Co. utilize, I felt that this training was so focused and deep that I made significant strides in my craft. The workshop sets out to, not only train the actor in voice, movement, verse, but also to cultivate an understanding and knowledge of the Elizabethan mind set, worldview, and religious climate. This is their approach to acting classical text, and it is effective and very exciting, not to mention fun. I would like to add that I found the faculty to be very respectful of the actor's process, and very caring. Great great place to take risks. P.S.: the food in the dorm is great! My only regret about the workshop is that I had to leave!

Having grown up in the area around Shakespeare & Company, the Company has been a major part of my personal growth and experience. Beyond providing stellar performances to the community - local and beyond - Shakespeare & Company's educational outreach programs have had an enormous effect on the area's youth, myself included. Through programs like the Fall Festival of Shakespeare and Shakespeare & Young Company, Shakespeare & Company immerses local students in the beauty of Shakespeare's text and the thrill of performance. The most amazing thing about Shakespeare & Company is the way in which is strikes a balance between creating remarkable art and teaching others to create it as well.

I am the parent of a lucky 15 year old boy who has the opportunity to work with Shakespeare and Co. personnel each fall to produce an adapted Shakespeare play for the Fall Festival of Shakespeare. In addition, before my son reached high school, I worked as a volunteer at the National Endowment for the Arts during a panel meeting discussing granting funds to various performing arts festivals around the nation. The proposal discussing the 20 year old Fall Festival of Shakespeare was remarkable in the way it engages the teen-agers to make the play happen. Nothing else being considered that day gave the kids that kind of active role. This is a great program, run by a great company!

I attended several weekend intensives in San Francisco which not only strengthened my skill in performing Shakespeare, but inspired me to produce and perform several plays: an all-female Merchant of Venice ( in conjunction with Woman's Will) and small-cast Macbeth (at the Loading Zone in Santa Rosa). I noticed a huge improvement in my vocal ability in performing outdoor Shakespeare after studying with Virgina Ness Ray, a teacher at Shakespeare and Co. Within a semester of her class I went from a rather weak Tatania one season to a clear and funny Olivia the next. Shakespeare and Co teaches the connection of language to body and breath which are so crucial and enlivening for performers and audience; I felt the language resonate in my bones as I performed: my breath supporting and opening my voice. Shakespeare and Co.'s teachers and coaches are committed, encouraging and inspiring. I attribute the joy and success of my experiences directly to Shakespeare and Co.'s excellent technique and training.

As an educator with 44 years of experience in teaching high school English, I have participated in countless professional development workshops and meetings. No professional development has come close to matching the powerful positive impact of the programs offered by Shakespeare and Company. Not only was my own teaching enlivened and deepened by exposure to the talented and dedicated actors of the company, but my entire school district was transformed into Shakespeare enthusiasts. The first daylong workshop I attended gave me a wealth of new tools with which to teach the plays and, more importantly, made the sense of "play" a key part of my approach to introducing students to Shakespeare. The risk-taking that Kevin Coleman demonstrated and encouraged in the little band of educators was a gift that carried on to my students as I asked them to go far beyond just reading the text into living the emotions of the characters. Then came my opportunity to participate in a month-long workshop "Shakespeare and the Rose Theater." That was truly transformative for me. I met and questioned world-renowned scholars in the field; I struggled along with my peers to memorize lines; I went on stage and felt the pain of a father losing his son to Macbeth's tyranny and the bawdiness of a tavernkeeper's wife who entertained Henry V. I returned to school ready to lead the entire district in a Renaissance festival, the centerpiece of which was an in-house performance by "Shakespeare and Company." An entire public high school in rural upstate New York dressed themselves in handmade Renaissance costumes, ate a banquet of authentic foods hosted by a queen and king, performed contradances, and enjoyed jesters and jousting matches. The information, the enthusiasm, and the attitudes I learned from the dedicated staff at "Shakespeare and Company" have, over the years, allowed me and other teachers like me to bring to life for thousands of students the ideas and emotions of Othello and Macbeth and Hamlet that otherwise would be mere words on a page. The tradition of inviting "Shakespeare and Company" to our district has continued, despite budget limitations, for over a decade, clear evidence that the entire district has been "hooked" by the Company's fine performances and student-friendly attitudes. I am deeply grateful for the experiences offered me by Shakespeare and Company and can only hope that others will be able to be similarly affected over the coming years.

Every summer a few lucky, hard-working and adventuresome teenagers are chosen to be part of the 9-week Shakespeare and Young Company project. Year after year, my husband, daughter and I have hosted a few of these young people in our home; nearly 30 of them by now. We watch them come a little unsure of themselves and wondering how they will fit into their new small group of fellow actors. Nine weeks later we see them transformed - confident, delighted with their new skills, and terribly sad to separate from their wonderful teachers, mentors and new friends. Thank heavens for FaceBook to stay connected! Every year we marvel again at the skills and dedication that Shakespeare and Company pours into this group - all in their busiest time of the year. Truly impressive and an exceptionally fine part of our local community. They are the best!!

The atmosphere inside Founder's theater during Fall Festival, could be described as a tidal wave of pure energy. From the moment the first actor steps on stage for the first show, the energy and support just emanates from every inch of the building, from the floor to the ceiling. Everything that happens both on the stage and in the audience is pure emotion. The training, the professionalism of the people in all areas (coaching, costumes, sets) is outstanding. I know of shy awkward kids who were cajoled into helping with set build, then working back stage and then through continued encouragement tried out for roles and were on stage in numerous productions. By the end of high school they were playing leading roles. These change from beginning to end was astounding and the confidence that these experiences brought has been life changing.

Shakespeare and Company is an invaluable organization for the arts. As an actor it provided me training and performance experiences that were transformational. (Even though it's almost 15 years since my stint there, I can use that word without reservation.) It has imbued me with a sense not only of gratitude, but of community, such that it is one of the landmarks in my 35-year career as an actor. There are many moments from my time there that defy easy description, but that will stay with me for the rest of my life. More than that, Shakespeare and Company sees itself as an inseparable part of its community. From its longstanding annual touring of New England schools, to the many ways it involves itself with the Lenox, Mass. community, to its vanguard efforts to widen casting opportunities for actors from ethnic minorities, it is a community resource whose absence would be felt mightily if – god forbid – it failed to survive. The place Shakespeare and Company holds in the American and international theatre community can't be given enough emphasis.

If you're anywhere in New England, whether an experienced devotee of the Bard or someone who thought he/she'd never be able to "get into" Shakespeare, you owe it to yourself to see this theater company. A cut above anything else being done in the US today. They also can use substantial financial support, and no arts organization deserves it more. Shakespeare & Company runs the highly ambitious yet successful Fall Festival of Shakespeare, which affords students from ten schools or more in the states of Massachusetts and New York the opportunity to work with professional directors, designers, and technicians in staging ninety-minute versions of Shakespeare's plays, which are then performed in each school and again at Founders' Theatre in Lenox, MA in a rollicking, supportive, non-contesting atmosphere. The students absolutely love the Festival, which is a life-changing experience for most of them. They make friendships, gain confidence, and develop a strong affection for Shakespeare and live theatre. There is no other project like this in the country. Our school, Springfield Central High School, is probably the most urban school of all those in the Festival, therefore relecting more diversity, and our students always feel valued and indeed embraced by the students from the other school, many of them from the Berkshires. We have taken part in the Festival for eighteen years, and as soon as we finish, the students are clamoring to know what play we are planning to do next year. On the Monday after the Festival, we gather in our theatre for "closure," in which the students sit in a circle on stage and each one has the chance to say what the experience meant to him or her. Every year, students speak from the heart, many becoming emotional, especially the seniors, for whom the experience is finished. They tell us how much the Festival means to them, and how they wait all year for the Fall because they look forward to it so much. Many of our students go on to be involved in theatre in college, and this certainly would not be the case if they hadn't had the opportunity to be part of the Fall Festival of Shakespeare.

I am most impressed by Shakespeare & Company's education program. One fabulous program, Fall Festival of Shakespeare, brings what the company calls "a language-based program" into ten high schools in western Massachusetts and eastern New York. What does that mean? Besides sending two young directors into each school each year to work with the kids to produce one of Shakespeare's plays both on the school stage and in one fabulous weekend, on the professional stage in Lenox, these young directors teach the kids in a most natural way to "speak Shakespeare." Without any of the usual pain and suffering but with joy and enthusiasm, these young people learn the subtleties of the language. Two great things come of this: first, when all the schools are together for festival weekend watching each other's plays, all the kids understand each play and each line - and are screaming and stomping and laughing on cue; second, and ultimately more important, they each have the tools to enjoy Shakespeare's works all their lives. They become passionate about a major piece of our culture that leaves many of us cold. This is priceless.

My husband and I try to get to the Shakespeare & CO. productions at least a couple of times, if not more, every summer. (We live about an hour's drive from Lenox.) We have thoroughly enjoyed each play we've seen there, including the productions of non-Shakespeare plays such as the brilliantly performed "The Actors Rehearse the Story of Charlotte Salomon" and the very funny family performances given in the Rose Footprint Theater every summer. The level of professionalism, fine acting skills and creativity of the company are top notch. In addition to our own enjoyment, our son and his family, who live in Lenox, have taken advantage of the wonderful children's programming at Shakespeare & Co.: our 8-yr.old granddaughter has participated in the week-long "Riotous Youth"summer camp for kids, where she performed in Romeo and Juliet (as done by 8-12 year olds!) and other Shakespeare plays. We greatly enjoyed the kids' performances but more than that, we were very impressed with how much Shakespeare our granddaughter learned, and how much she loved it. Shakespeare & Co. is a treasure and we have donated what we are able to afford to keep it going! We look forward seeing more terrific productions this coming summer.
