Review for Gardner's House Inc, Hartford, CT, USA
Gardner's House's strength in its philanthropic efforts is demonstrated in its collaborations with Kappa Delta Pi Omega Theta, an international education honor society. Under the direction of Ms. Maggie Gardner, this nonprofit organization's response to action stemmed from the effects of natural disaster/volcanic eruption in a developing country and the strong emphasis on community involvement.
On April 9, 2021, many families on the Caribbean Island of St. Vincent experienced several volcanic eruptions. These eruptions affected approximately 20 percent of the population who were evacuated by sea or land.
On April 16, 2021, Gardner's House liaised with the St. Vincent Shelters, who provided pictures and a video update of the situation from the north of the island showing extensive damage and the quantity of ash that had fallen. The liaison requested that the organization focused on helping children displaced in the shelters or school buildings. In a subsequent meeting on April 21, 2021, based on feedback provided on the Shelters (April 20, 2021, @ 9:12 PM), the team decided to focus on meeting the needs of 250 children placed in seven (7) shelters. The ages ranged from 12 months to 17 years. Towards this end, donations from fundraising activities were utilized to provide care packages and school supplies: toiletries, clothing, disinfectant, masks, reading materials, games, and snacks for the children; 150 female care packages were distributed to five shelters (toiletries, clothing, disinfectant, facemasks, bath towels, washcloths, etc.). Three āDā containers were delivered to St. Vincent and the Grenadines Seventh Day Adventist Mission/Kingstown Women's Ministry.
In August 2021, a total of 225 Backpacks with school supplies were donated to the mission. Other supplies delivered to the SVG Mission and one church in Kingstown included medical kits, reading materials, games for children and adults, hand sanitizers, masks, and dental hygiene supplies. One high school was the recipient of $500 given towards purchasing a refrigerator for the school.
It was a call to action, and Gardner's House rose to the occasion to help meet the needs of over 600 Vincentians displaced in shelters in non-threatened regions, mainly in Kingstown, the capital, of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
