Willstrong is a uniquely powerful and effective foundation, having raised and distributed hundreds of thousands of dollars in each of its first two years of operations, adding huge financial muscle to the work of researching and fighting for patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The foundation has a broad base of donors and organizations who support and promote its mission; it is well-known as a supporter of research and cutting-edge technologies; and it continues to broaden its reach and amplify the enthusiasm of its donors as they push for radical and powerful new therapies to finally cure AML. It is one of the most engaging, effective and resourceful foundations operating in the field of U.S. medical research today. Childhood leukemia patients have no greater or more powerful advocate than Willstrong.

This is perhaps the finest example I have ever seen of a non-profit founder -- Claudia Maniatis in this case -- grabbing a cause of importance to her, and building it quickly into a powerful and self-sustaining organization. She has raised an astonishing amount of money from a large population of supporters, and distributed those funds thoughtfully (and with urgency!) to people and organizations who are leading the fight against childhood leukemias. There is no organi9zation I would rather support, and no organization I know of that is as fundamentally *effective* at attacking its mission and honoring the children who suffer from this terrible affliction and inspiring so many of us to mobilize to defeat childhood blood cancers.
