While not so well known in the USA, Catholic Relief Services is a household name in some of the neediest countries around the world. Since it serves everyone, the name can be misleading. I recall learning that in Muslim countries such as Pakistan and Afghanistan, the local officials and partners respect CRS because they understand their motivation to serve comes from faith. Another thing I really like about CRS is that they put the local partners in the drivers seat. This NGO listens and serves at the invitation and in collaboration with the local people who know the culture, language and have the skills needed to bring about positive outcomes. CRS is there to provide appropruate technical and financial support. It also ensures accountability which is important to me, as a donor.
