Review for Palmetto Animal League, Okatie, SC, USA
After I retired I decided it would be fun to volunteer at a local animal shelter. It took me about a year to finally get up the nerve to walk into Palmetto Animal League. Like a lot of other people I was afraid I couldn't leave without taking someone home with me. But I did it! I walked in the door and asked for information on how I could volunteer. I toured the shelter to see the animals. I was impressed to see the kitties in cat rooms - not in cages. They were free to roam in the cat rooms, had shelves to climb on and windows to look out. Potential adopters and volunteers can go into each room and spend time with the kitties. I was so impressed with this set up. The dogs are in the back part of the shelter. They have individual kennels inside and a beautiful outside space to run. Those who are interested in adopting a dog are directed to the kennels where they are met by an employee.
The animals are given food, shelter and medical care. I started volunteering a few days after my first visit and six years later I am still enjoying about 6 hours a week visiting with the animals. The staff has been wonderful to work with. They are caring and love the animals. I am impressed at the extra care they give to special needs animals. Its hard not to get attached to an animal and sometimes really hard to say goodbye when they are adopted. But for every one that's adopted another comes into the shelter. So we start all over again giving each one of them love and wait for the day when they will find someone to take them home. They are given lots of love and care at this facility and I am so glad I had the nerve to walk in the door.
