Review for Skydog Sanctuary , Malibu, CA, USA
Skydog Sanctuary is an amazing organization, and they live and breathe their mission. I love that they rescue mustangs and burros and allow them to live their lives as wild as they want to be, never expecting anything from them. A hallmark of Skydog, I think, is their focus on reuniting families that have been torn apart due to the round ups. I believe they’ve reunited 7 or 8 families so far and the videos of the reunions are so touching. Even though the horses are allowed to remain wild, the Skydog team monitors the herds daily and provides medical care and/or extra feedings and water when necessary. If they need to bring a horse in from their vast property for medical attention, they lure the horse with treats or hay and usually brings one of their buddies along too to help reduce stress. All their animals have come from such difficult backgrounds but they flourish under their care. How do I know this? Claire, the founder, posts daily videos of the horses and burros so you can see for yourself how they are doing. Along with the videos, Claire usually has interesting stories or reflections to share about the horses. I’ve learned so much from these videos about horse behavior, the bonds they form, and what is happening to our wild mustangs and burros in the wild. I also appreciate that when Skydog does a fundraiser, they are very transparent about how much they need and how much they received. Skydog is all about what is best for the horses and burros, and will work with other sanctuaries with the same mission. Skydog has encouraged me to be an advocate for these animals because even though sanctuaries are a good alternative, wild mustangs and burros belong in the wild, out on the range!
