PASA is an exceptional organization for primate welfare and conservation! As a PhD candidate who studies the impact of maternal separation on brain structure in chimpanzees and rhesus macaques, I am constantly thinking about the health of wild orphaned primates. From many years of research, we know that individuals who experience trauma in early life can exhibit severe behavioral deficits and large-scale structural changes in the brain. It is comforting to know that there are so many dedicated people working together to care for these primates and give them the best lives possible.
