Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animals, Wildlife Preservation & Protection

Mission: PASA's mission is to support and represent PASA members in their critical work to protect and prevent the extinction of Africa’s primates.

The Pan African Sanctuary Alliance is a unique partnership of 23 wildlife centers in 13 countries across Africa that are leaders in the conservation and protection of great apes, monkeys, and their habitat.

PASA’s innovative approach unites our global perspective and international network with our members’ decades of experience in Africa as pioneers in primate protection.

With a vast network of members throughout Africa, PASA is in a unique niche to address conservation issues on a large scale and produce lasting changes to protect primates from extinction.

Direct beneficiaries per year: Last year, the Alliance rescued hundreds of great apes and monkeys from the illegal wildlife trade and the bushmeat crisis, and provides long-term care for more than 3,000 rescued primates.

Geographic areas served: The Pan African Sanctuary Alliance (PASA), the largest association of wildlife centers in Africa, includes 23 organizations in 13 African countries.

Programs: PASA's members are securing a future for Africa’s primates by working to stop the illegal trade in wildlife, rescuing, rehabilitating, and reintroducing orphans of the trade, protecting wild primate populations and their habitats, and educating and empowering communities. PASA strengthens our member organizations and is building a global movement to save Africa’s great apes and monkeys. The combination of PASA’s worldwide network and our members’ local expertise uniquely positions the Alliance to make a sustained impact on a large scale.

PASA is a fantastic organization. They were instrumental in making the necessary connections for an investigation of a critical health issue at a sanctuary. Their efforts benefitted the primates, the sanctuary, and the team of people that PASA helped assemble. Without PASA, such cross-disciplinary collaborations would not be possible!

I have worked on and off with PASA for fifteen years. PASA is full of people around the world incredibly dedicated to animal welfare and conservation. Their role as community conservation centers in low resource areas is crucial to the natural resource sustainability conversation in many countries. They are also local employers and builders of conservation capacity in many areas. This is a very good investment!

PASA is an impressive organization with a dedicated and highly experienced staff. I have been working with them this year on some of their projects. As someone that works with many similar mission-driven organizations, I can say with confidence that the PASA team is comprised of efficient, passionate individuals doing very important work for both people and animals. The team seeks out the latest science and expertise in the field and applies it to achieve novel, carefully planned solutions to meet their goals. It has been my pleasure working with them and I hope to do so more in the future!

PASA exemplifies what it means to be a leader in conservation. They have proven themselves as an organization time and time again. One of my favorite things about PASA is that they have very close relationships with people in Africa and let the communities lead the way for social change. They don't try to force their agenda. I think that's what makes them very different from a lot of other organizations. I also like that my donation goes to where it is needed most among dozens of sanctuaries.

I've been donating to this charity for a few years. My daughter is involved in conservation and she showed me the work of PASA. They work really hard to save chimps and monkeys. I would recommend anyone to take the time and see the hard work they do to help animals across the planet.

PASA is an exceptional organization for primate welfare and conservation! As a PhD candidate who studies the impact of maternal separation on brain structure in chimpanzees and rhesus macaques, I am constantly thinking about the health of wild orphaned primates. From many years of research, we know that individuals who experience trauma in early life can exhibit severe behavioral deficits and large-scale structural changes in the brain. It is comforting to know that there are so many dedicated people working together to care for these primates and give them the best lives possible.

I have recently begun volunteering with PASA, and it is such an honor! PASA is comprised of compassionate people dedicated to the welfare of primates, the sanctuaries/rescue & rehabilitation centers, and the local communities that are directly associated with these centers. This is truly a phenomenal, forward-thinking nonprofit organization that offers different options to aid in their mission (i.e., volunteering, advocacy, donations). PASA is an organization that represents the nonprofit spirit to aid others, advance the quality of life, and to better the world around them.

PASA is an incredible and unique alliance of people from all across the world fighting to save Africa's primates. Everyone involved, from the board members and sanctuary leaders to the volunteers and donors, is so passionate about this mission. I've worked for PASA for 6 months and volunteered with them for a year previously. I feel really privileged to be a member of the PASA family and to know that the work we're doing is making a real impact for these complex and intelligent animals.

PASA is an awesome organization that is doing really impressive work on behalf of the primates and sanctuaries in Africa. They are helping to connect different primate sanctuaries to become a stronger coalition. I am really impressed that a smaller organization can have such a great impact bringing different organizations together, supporting conservation education and understanding that the peoples needs in the communities are just as important as the primates they share the land with.

My journey with PASA began just under a year ago. Joining PASA has been the most fulfilling and rewarding experience! PASA and its 23 member sanctuaries are made up of dedicated, diligent, and extraordinary individuals who are working hard to protect and ensure a future for Africa's primates. All support and donations made to PASA are reflected in the impactful work that PASA and its member sanctuaries are able to perform directly on the ground. It is a nonprofit that is truly deserving of your support.

I am a recent volunteer grant writer for PASA and truly enjoying my experience working with the team. I am also doing some research on behalf of the Development Department. PASA is a small but mighty charity with dedicated and friendly professionals. I believe in and am contributing toward PASA's mission, and I am gaining experience in areas that may help me professionally. It's such a rewarding experience and I'm looking forward to continuing to help the organization make a real difference a world away from where the urgent need resides in Africa.

Starting work as a volunteer with PASA has confirmed the excellent opinion I have of this organization and of its important work in primate conservation throughout the continent of Africa. As a volunteer working remotely, I have been very much impressed by the dedication with which the PASA team facilitated my orientation and by their commitment in upholding best practices in animal conservation. As someone who cares deeply about sustainability and ethics in animal welfare activism I cannot stress enough how important the work accomplished by PASA is and I plan to continue actively supporting the organization in the future.

I've only just recently started volunteering for PASA, but I feel lucky & honoured to be part of an organisation I share values with! I study wild primates in the field & have done some conservation work in the past in wildlife rescue & rehabilitation centres. I believe the communication in place between PASA's members is key to successfully protect African primates & their habitat. I am grateful such an Alliance exists in Africa as so many animal lives can be saved through the hard work of the rescue & rehabilitation centres, their education programs & their fight against the wildlife trade. PASA needs & deserves your support to carry on its amazing & ever so important work!

I've been following PASA's work for a couple of years and I am constantly amazed by their work. PASA is a very serious organization dedicated to the conservation and welfare of African primates. They do an amazing job working hard with governments and sanctuaries to ensure that confiscated primates have a second chance. Besides being a fan of the organization I also occasionally volunteer helping with translations and I am very happy about how they treat the volunteers. Congratulations to PASA and their incredible team!

As a volunteer for the Pan African Sanctuary Alliance, I can speak highly of the work done by this genuinely dedicated organization. This alliance supports 23 member organizations in 13 African countries which cares for great apes, monkeys and other animals as well as their habitats. The success of their organization comes from the teamwork and dedication of all those involved - staff and volunteers located all over the globe! The team includes communicative and passionate individuals working to raise awareness globally about threats to wildlife. PASA is a wonderful nonprofit organization I am proud to be a part of.

I've been working with PASA for nearly six months now and I can't say enough about the caliber of the organization. During this time the Covid-19 pandemic has turned everything upside down and the team has provided consistent leadership and really dialed in its focus on fundraising for the member sanctuaries in Africa. Those organizations have been hit incredibly hard by the outbreak and it's truly impressive to see how this organization has orchestrated all of its resources to keep saving and caring for endangered wildlife in Africa.

I have been working and volunteering at PASA accredited sanctuaries and indirectly with the PASA team for a few years now and I must say that their levels of passion, dedication and standards are undeniably high. Their member sanctuaries have the best teams of caregivers, researchers, experts and volunteers and they have the highest standards of care for rescued wildlife in Africa. You can make no mistake by supporting PASA!

I have had the good fortune of meeting the PASA staff through my role as a volunteer and Board Member for a sanctuary that is an accredited PASA member. PASA has an amazing team that are collectively serving a vital role in connecting and supporting sanctuaries in their on-the-ground efforts. Their organization plays a part in education and training initiatives, emergency support, wildlife rescue and care, research and conservation, and more recently working with partner sanctuaries to outline and enact strategies that will end illegal wildlife trafficking.

I've had the pleasure of volunteering for Pan African Sanctuary Alliance for a little more than a year, helping out with their social media. It has been incredible to see the work they make possible--ensuring their member sanctuaries get the support they need to remain effective in rescue, conservation and education to save primates and their habitats throughout Africa. It's also great to volunteer with such passionate and dedicated people. Whether by donating or volunteering (and this can be done entirely remotely), you can be a part of this inspiring organization that works tirelessly to secure a future for endangered species whose existence is continuously under assault.

PASA is unifying association for 23 member organisations in 13 countries, with the aim of securing a future for Africa’s primates and their habitat. Local knowledge and a global network aid in the rescue, care and emergency responses, and is instrumental in education, research and capacity building. I am Sabrina Brando and I have volunteered for PASA for the last 10 years and delighted to be part of the PASA family! I coordinate the PASA primate care training program including all animal care aspects such as nutrition, enrichment, and good human-animal relationships for animals who come to the sanctuaries as orphans and rescues. Global support and local experts all contribute to making this program a success with lots of outcomes and activities promoting optimal and positive welfare for the animals at PASA sanctuaries. Visiting PASA sanctuaries, attending and presenting at management, caregiver and veterinary workshops has given me time and time again proof of the extraordinary dedication and knowledge of people working in and for PASA sanctuaries. More support will allow PASA and connected sanctuaries to continue to make differences for animals in their care, the commitment to the people who work in and live around the sanctuaries, and education and research programs which aid in the protection. Please support PASA and find out how you can help by visiting https://pasa.org/help-us-save-lives/ - thank you!

My name is Alma van Dorenmalen and I have worked for 5 years at the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre which is accredited by PASA for many years. I have been part of many development activities initiated by PASA and have been able to visit other sanctuaries. Because of PASA's existence we are able to communicate better, learn and do our work more efficiently. PASA stands for excellence in sanctuaries and supports them. Because of PASA we are able to do more: help more animals in need, protect habitats and prevent animals from getting extinct. Additionally the people within PASA dedicate their time often on a volunteer basis! However we need more support to make sure this nonprofit can help even more!
Very pleased that I am part of the PASA family!

PASA is an amazing organization. They have a unique role - using their international network to support their member wildlife centers across Africa.

As we lose thousands of wild great apes every year, organizations like PASA need our support more than ever.

As one of the sanctuaries that founded PASA Ape Action Africa has been involved with the organisation from the very start. Since the outset Pasa's role has been to support the sanctuaries and although the activities its undertaken has changed over time it's purpose remains the same. Without PASA the sanctuaries would not be unified and not able to share knowledge and expertise and would not have access to a network of support.
It's essential that PASA can continue to support and keep together the sanctuaries.

The 22 sanctuaries that comprise PASA are extraordinary because despite great difficulties (such as elusive funding, shortage of space, and not enough time to do all the things they would like) they have created safe and supportive communities for thousands of orphaned apes and monkeys that they have rescued from terrible conditions. The dedication and passion of the people who work there has to be seen to be believed.
PASA sanctuaries show that every individual primate is worth caring for. Not only does this mean that the sanctuaries provide a high ethical standard and boost welfare efforts in the country in general, but also they provide an invaluable base for conservation efforts. For example in Uganda Lilly Ajarova is the director of the Ngamba Island sanctuary for chimpanzees. As a researcher and conservationist working with wild chimpanzees in Kibale National Park, I repeatedly find that collaboration with Lilly's teams is helpful at all sorts of level - including the work that Lilly's group does on assessing and protecting the wild chimpanzee population in the Hoima area.
The care and conservation problems are different in every African country, so what is needed is local expertise with deep experience in that particular area. That is what PASA sanctuaries provide; and through the PASA alliance, the sanctuaries support each other in their missions of rescues, support and hope. Go PASA!

I have served in multiple capacities, volunteer, committee member and board member. It is a terrific organization with passionate people playing a key role in conservation in Africa. Our member sanctuaries are top notch and make such a huge impact on the lives not only of the animals in their care, but also of their cousins in the wild.

As a volunteer for PASA, I've been able to see the great work it does up close. Africa's great apes need help if they are going to survive and PASA is doing amazing work- together with its member organizations - to protect them and their habitats. PASA provides support, training and, in emergencies, crisis funding to a network of wildlife centers in 13 countries in Africa. Supporting PASA contributes to both direct care and to strategic planning and programs that support primate conservation and welfare.

I can't recommend this organization highly enough!
PASA first came on my radar when I researched ways to help out great apes in Africa. This organization is essentially an alliance of 22 primate sanctuaries across Africa. It provides accreditation for the sanctuaries, financial support, outreach, staff training and helps facilitate animal rescues and special projects.
Because PASA functions solely FOR these sanctuaries, it is a very task-driven, goal oriented organization. Which makes it a very safe, reliable choice when it comes to donating. They frequently work with the local communities to support livelihood alternatives and conservation education. This is key to making any sort of impactful change in the world of animal conservation and PASA really understand this.
I've found the people behind PASA to be an extremely dedicated and effective group of individuals. They are primarily primate experts and seasoned non-profit professionals that care very deeply about bringing aid to Africa's threatened primates.
Their website is a great resource for any and all info about primate conservation in Africa.
I really believe that without PASA, the primates of Africa would be much closer to extinction .
