Review for The Taylor Family Foundation, Livermore, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

For the last 20 years (with the exception of our COVID pandemic in 2020), the Taylor Family Foundation (TTFF) has generously provided a camp experience for children and adolescents with inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease). Camp has a huge impact on the well-being of our campers, giving them experiences that enhance their self-esteem and ability to cope with every day life. Even our counselors, most of whom also have inflammatory bowel disease, function as role models for our campers and also benefit from the peer interactions and friendships that develop from camp. All of them, from the 7 year old first year campers to the teens to the returning counselors, value their week at camp to the point where, as they leave camp, it’s not uncommon to see tears flowing, hugs around for their cabin mates, and the beginning of a 51-week countdown to next year’s camp. Campers gain friendships, daily camp experiences – including a ropes course and climbing wall, swimming pool (not always easy when a child has an ostomy), campfires, archery, horses, art work and just hanging out with new friends. Another indirect benefit has been the opportunity for parents of these kids to have a week to themselves, feeling secure that their children are being supervised by an expert group of physicians and nurses with intimate knowledge and experience caring for children with inflammatory bowel disease. Kudos to the TTFF and all of the donors and volunteers it takes to help the camp be such a unique and wonderful venue for our kids!!
