Review for Active4youth, Spokane, WA, USA
Active4Youth's (A4Y) mission is to combat childhood obesity and juvenile delinquency through after school sports. Currently, A4Y puts on a youth cross country program for elementary aged students. The program is free to students attending one of the 34 elementary schools in the Spokane Public School District. Currently, over 3,000 children participate in the after school program, which includes two cross country meets where children can qualify to compete in the All City Cross Country Meet.
This program is important for our community. Of the 34 elementary schools in the Spokane School District, 27 are Title I schools, meaning that over half of their student populations receive free or reduced lunch. More than half of these 27 schools have free and reduced lunch rates at higher than 70% with one school at 93%. This tells us that families in Spokane have a hard time providing food for their kids much less signing their kids up for organized sports programs.
Active4Youth fills a much needed void by giving these kids a safe alternative afterschool where they can participate in a life-long sport while learning how to lead a healthy and active lifestyle.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
This program has a huge reach and impacts a large at-risk population within the District. There are over 16,000 children in Spokane Schools. Approximately 3,100 participated in the elementary cross country program, which is 20% of the elementary population.
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
Broaden the program to the other school districts in the area, to include East Valley, West Valley, Central Valley, Cheney and Mead.
