My Nonprofit Reviews

Review for HealthWell Foundation, Germantown, MD, USA
About 10 years ago, my mother was diagnosed with severe aplastic anemia, and she contracted iron overload from too many blood transfusions. The iron chelating medication cost more than $8,000/month "after" insurance, and my parents did not have this money. A nurse at the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center recommended the HealthWell Foundation. I was leary at first --- my parents were not rich, but they were not near the poverty line either. Simply put, the HealthWell Foundation helped our family. My mom's hair stopped falling out, and she was able to stop taking this medication after about one year. She lived for another eight years, and I am so very grateful for her extra years. I'm an administrator in Gastroenterology at the Univ. of Pittsburgh / UPMC, and I always forward the HealthWell Foundation's disease funds list and newsletter to our social workers and to they physicians & nurses working with currently supported diseases. The HealthWell Foundation has helped so many families, and they deserve top attention for this Great Nonprofit designation.
