Having been in both roles (patient/survivor and volunteer) I’m here to tell you that, for me, the chemotherapy experience was vastly more comfortable because of the volunteer at the clinic. Being “in the chair” is different for everyone, of course, but having had the experience is what I think makes Regarding Cancer volunteers special. We’ve been there, as patients and caregivers, and so have insights into the needs of both patients and staff. I have no idea what my in-person volunteering will look like on the other side of the pandemic, but we also provide one-on-one “matching”, a sort of swim buddy program, so should someone who is currently in treatment want to talk with someone who’s had a similar experience, we’re here. I’m very honored to be part of this group of caring volunteers.
