What an incredible nonprofit with such caring and thoughtful leaders. Since volunteering with Re:Cancer, I've learned so much. It's a program unlike any offered in the ATX area. I'm so thankful to work with them.
As a former cancer patient, I volunteer with this group to counsel with, and help brighten the day of current cancer patients. Talking with a former cancer patient was one of the 'treatments' that most helped me get through chemotherapy.
What I see in the Regarding Cancer administration and other volunteers is a true love for what this organization does. And more importantly it shows in the faces and voices of the current cancer patients being served - bringing smiles and needed communications to and from those affected by this deadly disease.
I came in touch with Regarding Cancer, after a couple months I finished my treatment. I was seeking for someone to talk to, someone I could relate. I was feeling lost, and scared, I felt so small.
Linda Richards, the program coordinator, did an amazing job. She matched me with Vanessa. I met Vanessa a Saturday afternoon at a coffee shop. We chatted for hours. I had so many questions to ask her. Vanessa answer every single of my questions with so much kindness. She gave me hope! talking to her made me see things in a different way. After we finish talking and left the coffee shop...I was so thankful with the organization and specially with Linda who did an extraordinary job, finding such a special and beautiful soul as Vanessa to be my match.
Having been in both roles (patient/survivor and volunteer) I’m here to tell you that, for me, the chemotherapy experience was vastly more comfortable because of the volunteer at the clinic. Being “in the chair” is different for everyone, of course, but having had the experience is what I think makes Regarding Cancer volunteers special. We’ve been there, as patients and caregivers, and so have insights into the needs of both patients and staff. I have no idea what my in-person volunteering will look like on the other side of the pandemic, but we also provide one-on-one “matching”, a sort of swim buddy program, so should someone who is currently in treatment want to talk with someone who’s had a similar experience, we’re here. I’m very honored to be part of this group of caring volunteers.
Regarding Cancer has been an unbelievable organization for me. In 2010, I lost my brother to colorectal cancer. It was and still is a very difficult time coping with his loss. I met Linda Richards and Diana Dobson with Regarding Cancer when I participated in the Get Your Rear in Gear walk/run which raises awareness and prevention for colorectal cancer. I was able to share my story with them and also learned about their non-profit organization. I was happy to hear that Regarding Cancer helps cancer patients and/or family members affected by a loved one who has/had cancer. I immediately felt that I wanted to get involved with this organization to help others AND help myself by giving back.
Before COVID, I was able to be paired up with and individual who was dealing with a family member's cancer. I was able to give encouragement and advice to help through the difficult time. I also volunteered twice a week for Texas Oncology where I would sit with patients while they receive treatments. Sometimes I would just pass out water and snacks, while other times I would sit with the patients and allow them to tell their story. Sometimes they asked about mine and I would tell them about my brother. It was therapeutic for both of us.
Regarding Cancer has allowed me to volunteer for a cause that is near and dear to my heart. I can't thank Linda or Diana enough for their commitment and hard work for this organization. They have help so many people affected by cancer. Thanks to them, I am able to be a part of this amazing non-profit organization.
Regarding Cancer is very helpful and kind to all patients it serves. Many of the patients the organization helped become volunteers. I believe in the axiom: If you see something you remember...if you hear something you forget...but if you have been through something you understand. All RegardingCancer volunteers Understand! I rate this organization 5+ stars because I am a volunteer and a patient. No wasted overhead on excess staff and perks like many non-profits. Doctors and nurses highly respect our group. Regarding Cancer is top-notch and deserves top-notch recognition.
Regarding Cancer offers a much needed service to people needing support during a difficult time in their lives. This organization matches volunteers with people who are on a cancer journey, either as a patient or caregiver. Volunteers have walked this road themselves, therefore making them able to offer empathy from a place only one who has been there can know.
I have been a volunteer with Regarding Cancer since 2014. Prior to that time, I worked as a Public Health Nurse for 30 years. I can honestly say that volunteering with this organization has been one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had.
I volunteered in the infusion centers and along with other volunteers provided comfort measures like, blankets, coffee, snacks and emotional support to the patients and their families.
Linda Richards, the Program Manager is extremely devoted to all who volunteer and to the clients we serve. She personally trains each volunteer and also manages the Match Program which links newly diagnosed clients to individuals who have the same type of cancer diagnosis, but are further along in their treatment so they can mentor the newly diagnosed client through their treatment.
Both Linda Richards and Diana Dobson, the Executive Director, have worked tirelessly to keep this Organization viable , so we can continue provide the extremely important services to our clients.
As a part of my volunteering with this organization, I have worked with a Girl Scout troop on two occasions as they made blankets out of fleece for our clients, which the clients love.
I am very proud to be a member of this organization!
Linda S. Moore, MS, RN
People with cancer need love and support. Talking to someone that has gone through a similar experience and who understands the fear and stress is comforting. The staff and volunteers at Regarding Cancer should be commended for their work in providing emotional support and information for patients living with cancer. It's an amazing organization!
