Review for NA'AMAT USA, Los Angeles, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I have been a member of NA'AMAT USA since 1973. I am very proud of the work this organization has done. It's mission is to improve the lives of women and children in Israel. NA'AMAT ISRAEL is the largest social service organization in Israel. It currently operates close to 300 day care centers (These day care centers were the model for the Head Start Program in the US), It also has two youth villages and a number of high schools for teens at risk. It started the first Woman's Shelter in Israel and is now the model for subsequent shelters that have opened. We have a woman's legal division that helps women with workplace discrimination, divorce and other issues. We offer counseling to families. NA'AMAT ISRAEL is a continuing evolving organization to meet the needs of women and children in Israel.

NA'AMAT USA supports the projects of NA'AMAT ISRAEL. One of the projects that I connected with is our two youth villages. These are comparable to a boarding school in the US. These are for teens who are at risk. They have been recommended by a school counselor, the police, therapist, or a doctor. They have to maintain a C or better average in school. They have a farm animal to care for and chores to do. They meet with a counselor weekly or more often. For many of them they just needed to get out of their environment to be able to succeed at school. Both youth villages have had outstanding success.

I became involved with NA'AMAT USA in 1972. As a teacher and my interests I was very attracted to the projects that NA'AMAT was involved with in Israel. Their focus on women, families, and children touched me. I know that they have always looked to see what was needed at the time. When there was a large immigration from Ethiopia they created a program to assimilate the emigres into Israeli society. Creating schools for teens at risk was also very important to me. Fighting for the rights of women to have equal pay and equal access to jobs were also important. I think the NA'AMAT evolves constantly to meet the changing needs of Israeli society.

Thank you for your years of volunteering for NA'AMAT. We continue to fight for gender equality and to improve the lives of women, children & families in Israel.
