Review for Great Flag Caper, Irving, TX, USA
This project's goal is to promote patriotism, bring neighbors closer and share our pride in our country. Over 300 volunteers lovingly place over 40,000 American flags in front of homes , churches and businesses on the 4th of July. We are a diverse group brought together because we love our country. We want to pass on that love to the next generation. We have grandparents who take along their grands to help put out flags--and on the way they tell the grands why this country means so much to them. We often share our flags with military groups who want to put flags on the graves of the soldiers. After our flags are placed, we all gather together for a Patriotic Potluck dinner at my house. We sing patriotic signs and visit with all our volunteers.
Review for Jubilee Park & Community Center, Dallas, TX, USA
As a volunteer, I have helped with the Senior Citizens Thanksgiving Dinner, the neighborhood clean-up day, the Steering Committee, the Angel Tree Christmas program, and writing for numerous publications about this amazing neighborhood revitalization program. To see the neighborhood elementary school go from the worst performing in Dallas to be rated Exemplary is a testament to the efforts of hundreds of volunteers. When others had relegated the neighborhood children as doomed to be low-performers, the Jubilee volunteers proved them wrong! Big Time.Jubilee was started by the efforts of an outstanding church, Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal, and now the army of volunteers reaches over the entire city. Senior citizens can watch the children play in the beautiful and safe park. Housing is so improved. Nutrition and health issues are big priorities. When we share communion with residents and volunteers (in English and Spanish), the bond of friendship and humanity is bridged so beautifully.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
Seeing the change in O.M. Roberts Elementary School---which went from the lowest performing to Exemplary. Also, the safety that has been added to this area. In an area where so many people have never graduated from high school, now children are even attending college.
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
Just expand the borders of the neighborhood! It is the pinnacle of neighborhood revitalization because it values the people who are there and helps them improve their piece of the universe. It is truly a model for neighborhood revitalization for the whole country.
