In March due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, I lost my job, and my husband Anthony who I care for was hospitalized due to multiple seizures. During the same time my best friends of over 22 years was battling cancer, and lost her battle a few days before my birthday. I was having a hard time because not only was I becoming warned down, as my husband needs 24 hour supervision until they can figure out what is causing the seizures. I didn't have my friend to call and reach out to. I was feeling down and my birthday was right around the corner. I was online researching resources and I reached out to The Yellow Ribbon Fund and they right away connected me and I soon met Kenna & Lisa. The week my husband was discharged from the hospital, YRF had a virtual event and I won a prize, which was a pizza dinner which couldn't have come at a better time, as it helped me concentrate on my husband care at home and not have to cook meals. Kenna and Lisa have been great at organizing virtual events to keep us engaged, and I even got invited to a retreat in PA the week of my birthday which I had planned to skip due to all the grief.
I must have cancelled two or three times, because I was nervous, anxious of leaving the house especially during the pandemic. Kenna and Tiffany both were so patient with me, encouraging me in whatever decision I made, and helped ease my anxiety when I had questions. I am so blessed I was able to get my family to assist at home so that I can get away for a few days to refuel.
It was the best relaxation, refueling that my soul needed. I was able to meet a few other caregivers who understood my challenges because they are on same journey. We were treated to massages and spa services, breakfast and dinners and activities, It nice to be reminded to take care of ourselves which in turns helps our warriors and the entire family. I THANK the staff, volunteers and donors who are making it possible for us the spouses, caregivers to not only remind us that we should take care of ourselves, and make time for ourselves but actually providing the resources to do it, they are surly walking the talk and I wanted to share this picture that just shows me relaxed with no worries, taking it all in, and allowed me to enjoy my birthday! The Coalition to Salute Americas Heroes SUPPORTS not only the warrior but the family, not only on holidays but everyday. They do not forget about you, we get checked up frequently, we are provided with resources to help meet day to day needs, and they engage us through the Veterans Caregivers Alliance. The volunteers are amazing as well. They truly do INSPIRE us! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR WALKING WITH US THROUGH OUR JOURNEY
