Review for Operation Asha, Chicago, IL, USA
Operation ASHA is the world’s third largest NGO in tuberculosis treatment and prevention. The organisation is dedicated to bringing Tuberculosis treatment and other health services to the doorsteps of the disadvantaged people. It has developed an effective and highly innovative patient-centric, low cost and last mile delivery system. The system is heavily supported with technology. The biometric strategy OpASHA deploys is called eCompliance Suite, and is a combination of 3 technologies: eCompliance, eDetection, and eAlert System. The unique model is scalable and replicable worldwide. The organisation serves nearly 10 million people, living in over 5000 slums, villages and tribal areas across India and Cambodia. Its model has also been replicated by third parties in India and eight other countries: Afghanistan, Tanzania, Peru, Uganda, Kenya, Dominican Republic, Zambia and Cambodia.
Operation ASHA’s CHWs raise awareness, do active case finding in the communities for symptomatics, ensure testing, link them to high quality medical practitioners and provide treatment and ensure adherence. The organisation is striving towards TB-free India.
Other than Tuberculosis, the organisation also provides the services for adolescent’s health, diabetes, vaccination, hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. It generates the employment for the youth of the same community it works with.
The use of eCompliance, a world renowned technology application, significantly reduces misreporting of performance by health workers. Biometric monitoring appears as a promising tool for re-enforcing TB control strategies and also ensures the services to the doorsteps of the beneficiaries.
The organisation has won many national and international prizes and awards. The impact of its innovative technology and work got polished in several national and international media platforms and journals. Recently, in the latest ‘Global Tuberculosis Report, 2019’ (Page 9).
I have been working with Operation ASHA since Jan 2016. This is the best organisation among ones I have been working with.
The clear purpose of the organisation to serve the most underserved on the ground motivates me to work harder. The organisation believes in innovations, not only in technologies but also in personalities. As a work place, the organisation gives me the full opportunities to use my skills. It has a better atmosphere for learning where Individual and teamwork have equal importance. I always get the opportunity to have open communication with team and senior management and get constructive feedback. The things I like most are its innovative approaches to serve the most marginalised people and the learning atmosphere.
