Review for Palomacy Pigeon & Dove Adoptions, San Francisco, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

My dog, Kasper, and I were on a late evening walk when we spotted a lonely racing pigeon wandering in the street of a busy train station, barely dodging incoming busses and cars. The poor little thing was walking in circles, unable to fly due to exhaustion and dehydration. I shooed him onto a nearby grassy area to get him out of the street, called in reinforcements (read: my boyfriend and a cardboard box), and brought him home.

We had no idea what to do next, other than give him water and seeds: He wasn’t a wild bird, evident by his banded legs, so no refuge would take him. I jumped online and found Palomacy, and that’s how my life changed (for the better) forever.

I love animals, and I had rescued many before. But what in the world does one do with an unreleasable domestic pigeon? I found out the answer soon enough: adopt him! The only problem was that I had zero experience with birds and lived on the opposite coast as Palomacy. But Elizabeth didn’t waste a second. She called me and we spoke for hours. She provided all the guidance I needed and answers to my gazillion questions. Later, Jill welcomed my (many) emails and has continued to guide me through this learning process. And both women have joined in on group texts to help me out and cheer me on as I’ve fallen in love with my little bird, whom we named Pomme de Terre (Pomme for short).

Because of Palomacy, I've come to learn so much about these beautiful and emotional birds, and the awful fate so many of them face. In turn, I’ve been able to educate and open the minds of others about dove and pigeon rescue. I will be forever grateful to Elizabeth, Jill, and Palomacy for giving me the tools and support to care for such a special creature. I feel very lucky to have my sweet little Pomme and to be able to give him a loving home for the rest of his days.
