Review for Institute of Flight (formerly Future of Flight Foundation), Mukilteo, WA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

The Future of Flight Foundation is taking off. The foundation is tasked with creating an environment to cultivate curiosity and stimulate imagination. This is done through it's education program, exhibits, events, and foreign exchange program. Over the past year, the Future of Flight has spent considerable time and resources in developing the Flights of Innovation Education Program. This is an immersive based learning model that pairs local schools with tools, resources, and educators to encourage students to use their creativity, teamwork, and research to solve real world problems that do not have one solution. The final project is for them to present to the audience their solution, which was derived from their research. The amount of passion and energy shown, by the students is indicative of putting 100% effort into learning. The skills that they take out of the process relates to public speaking, math and science, working in a team, logic, and the idea that every member can be an important part of the team. I witnessed one student who throughout the school year was too shy to speak up in class, but desired to present at the final presentation. He did, his classmates cheered, and the smile on his face showed that he broke through a barrier by going way beyond his comfort level. There are many stories like this that demonstrate that by giving students a venue, you can have them accomplish things that are difficult to be taught in a classroom based environment. The exhibit committee has been working to create an environment that inspires, challenges, and encourages thought. This is a great organization that is a huge asset to the local community, but is also one that is experienced by hundreds of thousands from around the world.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I have experienced the education program, seen the new exhibits on the floor and have heard about the exhibits that are being considered for the future. I have have also witnessed the stories from the exchange students from around the world.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Seeing it grow... When I first was exposed to the Future of Flight Foundation there was not an education program and we were still defining the mission of the foundation. We have made huge leaps, are heading in the right direction! The future is bright.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Very enthusiastic about the Future of Flight, very passionate about telling the story of the foundation, where aviation has been and where it is going. Very friendly and you can tell they love being here.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Fully develop the education program, design and develop exhibits that educate, inspire and create curiosity. The community is loving what they are seeing, and want more than we have the resources to handle.
