As I drove to "A Mother's Rest" to begin my weekend of respite, I was squeezing in as many cell calls as possible to turn over contact numbers and information. My sons were taking over my usual caregiver responsibilities. The care needs of my loved one were changing.. We were teetering from the news that my young husband (65 yrs) and father of 2 young men was now in the end stage of his life. Our children insisted I still show up AND stay for the long respite weekend, as planned. I thought I should bail. It seemed like it was the worst possible timing. I discovered just the opposite - it was perfect timing and exactly what I needed.
I had many comfy seating choices. I got to choose when I wanted to sit in a quite out of the way space and and when I wanted to be around the other women. I would, sleep, rest, reflect, watch the squirrels, write, and enjoy the company of passionate caregivers. We each knew a part of the others' challenges and heartaches because it was also part of our story. Conversations were easy, but not required. The downtown location of this quaint town was a perfect setting with no hustle. What I didn't expect was to be inspired.. Laura Roberts, the founder, makes us all want to think bigger than ourselves and our singular story. Together we were all women on respite who could honor the boldness of each mother who chooses problem solving and advocacy over anger or resentment. Rest can change perspective. Rest can equip for the next chapter. Rest can put breath back in our lungs. Respite can open a heart to get back to that sweet first love experience. "A Mother's Rest" did all of this for me. I look forward to passing on to others a weekend of respite. I am now part of the tribe and I am grateful for all those I am joining.
