Review for PDK International, Inc., Arlington, VA, USA
In 1977 I was nominated to be a member of Phi Delta Kappa International, the University of California Berkeley Chapter 0011. This was a real honor to get nominated to be a member of the prestigious Berkeley Chapter. This chapter was the 11th chapter organized in 1911. As a member, I benefited from the teacher support that PDK provided. The support included many teaching resources like materials, lectures, networking, access to research and practical tools to help educators deliver excellence. As a teacher who was completing advanced degrees at the University, I had access to data that was not available to the general public, all at no cost! One of my favorite resources was a subscription to the Kappan, the renown magazine of PDK. I could also apply for scholarships and traveling scholarships.
Later when I as an administrator began coaching student teachers and interns, I encouraged the them to join PDK to take advantage of the benefits of the organization. Many teachers joined on their own and started networking with other PDK members, sharing with other educators.
Our chapter eventually suffered a problem that started affecting organizations in the 90's and 00's. Our membership began to shrink. We tried many ways to get more members to no avail. Finally, our Board reached out to PDK International for help. After some discussion, PDK International offered one-year complimentary digital memberships for educators in our school district. Last month we sent an invitation to join PDK to the educators. We received 52 positive responses, DOUBLING our membership!! Our first meeting with our new members is soon.
We hope that our chapter, UC Berkeley 0011 will be able to help the new members learn about the benefits of Phi Delta Kapa. PDK is committed to growing leaders in education and strengthening schools so that every student thrives! And our chapter will continue to support educators as they work with students reach new heights.
