My first experience was their Poz Life Weekend, a 2 day whirlwind of classes, emotional support groups and creative activities for people infected or affected by HIV. I had just been diagnosed 6 months prior and was still struggling with the feeling that my life was over. I came to the weekend hoping for a little information about medications and inflammation but walked away with so much more. Meeting an incredibly diverse group of people living with the virus helped normalize it for me and see myself outside of the constant stigma I was hearing from the media and an ill informed gay community, my parents, my work, my friends, almost everyone. I needed people in my life who were Poz and still thriving so that I could find a way there myself. This group helped me find the path. 4 years later I was so grateful for what they had given me and others in my life that I began volunteering for them. The surprise has been that I get almost as much out of volunteering as I did out of participating. They are a dynamic group of people infused with love and the determination to heal and support others in their healing process. They honestly gave me my life back.
