Review for Forever Homes for Foster Kids , San Diego, CA, USA
What this non-profit does and how little money it exists on currently is extraordinary.
Imagine a scenario like this.
A man is going to prison for 10 years. He has a 15-year old who doesn't know of any other family she can live with as her mom abandoned her when she was a baby and went back to Mexico. If there is no family, this 15-year old will go into the foster care system. The case worker gives Forever Homes for Foster Kids the file. Their goal is to find the extended family and see if they will adopt the child before she goes into foster care.
The twist here, the family is Latino so finding family requires other skills like not only speaking, writing and reading Spanish but also an understanding of the culture. It is rare that calling the grandmother in Mexico will result in her trusting you enough to let you know that she has a cousin in L.A.
One more twist, Mexico does not have a white pages. It is hard to contact someone so far away when you don't' have their phone number. But this non-profit has special resources that no one else has. The founders of this non-profit lived and worked in Mexico for 10+ years so they are able to contact people they know all over Mexico who will send someone out and get that contact information.
The work and dedication of the few people at this non-profit is inspiring. I've donated money to them because I see how they use it and it Is being used well and to the benefit of so many.
Think of how much money it saves us to get a child out of Foster care and placed with family. Think of how much better the life is for a child who isn't placed in foster care but with family instead.
My goal is to see this non-profit get big enough that they can get through every case for every Latino in the foster care. They have a high success rate of finding families.
I am not fluent in Spanish so I can't help them with cases but I can help by giving money so that they can reunite kids with relatives.
