Review for Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen, New York, NY, USA
I visited NYC in May for a short holiday and along with my wife volunteered for a shift at the Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen. We live in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in England but this didn't present any obstacles to us signing up in advance, which was a difficulty with a couple of other places we looked at. We were given a great welcome, familiarized with our roles and the wider operation explained. Its an impressive and highly organized set up, but everything is done with respect and love. The food served was excellent - a varied menu, nicely cooked and of a high quality and we met many interesting and friendly people - others volunteering for the day, long term volunteers and above all the customers who use this soup kitchen. In reality, its so much more than a soup kitchen - there is lots of additional help around accommodation, addictions, finances and clothing and the whole spirit is one of acceptance, non-judgement and love. Later in the week we visited many of the more famous sights and experiences of New York City but this will remain with us as a wonderful memory - I'm only sorry its not local enough to volunteer regularly!
