I was in NYC for 3 days during my first trip to America. Signing up to volunteer was quick/easy and getting to the church was really simple. The organisation made the day extremely fun and the amount of gratitude I got from the service users was heartwarming. It was such a life changing experience and I can wholeheartedly say it was my favourite experience of my month in North America - I would recommend it to anyone! Thank you Holy ApostleS for providing me with such a great opportunity and I will definitely be back.

I'm in New York City to take some classes for two weeks and my classes are in the evening, so I thought I could try something different than the usual tourist stuff - which I already did in the past - in the morning. I went to the HASK yesterday for the first time and I genuinely enjoyed it! The whole thing was very well organized and proceeded smoothly! I was given clear instructions about what I had to do and everyone was very welcoming and similing to me. The venue looked more like a restaurant than a soup kitchen! I did some volunteering in other soup kitchens in the past, in France and Italy, but those places were kinda shabby and sad, with rows of long tables and benches, where people were amassed without any comfort or privacy. I really appreciated the arrangement here, because people where actually treated like clients rather than "needies". Small round tables where scattered all around the venue, with chairs around them with a maximum of four or five per table. There was a big screen on the wall with a Power Point presentation that kept on running all the time and it showed all the services the "needies" could benefit from, like clothing programs or movie projections, which I think is pretty cool. But the best thing to me was that a girl, who was also a volunteer, played the piano for two hours in a row to cheer up people while they were eating!! That was awesome!!!!!! While I worked I could listen to so many awesome songs and it was sooo enjoyable and fun! These kind of details made me feel like people were being treated like people, I mean humanly in a genuine way, instead of just being treated like "the poors ones that we're assisting". My working time as a volunteer literally flew by, since I enjoyed that so much, and it wasn't heavy at all. I really liked the whole peaceful, serene atmosphere over there. The staff who coordinated the volunteers was absolutely nice and kind and answered my manifold questions - I'm a very curious person and I observe a lot - with lots of patience! I definitely want to go back there today and the following days! That's such a great way to spend my time in NY differently than the usual visitors!!
I work as a high school Sunday School teacher at a Catholic Church. We decided to choose Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen as a volunteer service with our students and teachers. The hosts were accommodating, amazing, and super friendly. All our students had different roles, which was interesting to hear about when we debriefed. Revere, the manager who hosted us, did an amazing job explaining the history of the place and providing us with information about the soup kitchen. She kept us engaged and excited while doing this service. We definitely recommend other groups to come volunteer with them!
I volunteered with a team from Milbank and it was a humbling and gratifying experience. I learned a great deal and got an insight into just what hungry looks like. The kitchen is very well run and organized and I applaud it's contributions to the community. I plan to return. I think that everyone should experience it first hand to see just how misguided our judgments about the homeless and the hungry are.
We came on an outreach trip with our entire office. We had a wonderful time lending a hand. Revere was exceptional; we all felt involved and well utilized! It's a very moving experience to take part in an activity that so immediately affects people. I hope we can return soon and often.
I visited NYC in May for a short holiday and along with my wife volunteered for a shift at the Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen. We live in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in England but this didn't present any obstacles to us signing up in advance, which was a difficulty with a couple of other places we looked at. We were given a great welcome, familiarized with our roles and the wider operation explained. Its an impressive and highly organized set up, but everything is done with respect and love. The food served was excellent - a varied menu, nicely cooked and of a high quality and we met many interesting and friendly people - others volunteering for the day, long term volunteers and above all the customers who use this soup kitchen. In reality, its so much more than a soup kitchen - there is lots of additional help around accommodation, addictions, finances and clothing and the whole spirit is one of acceptance, non-judgement and love. Later in the week we visited many of the more famous sights and experiences of New York City but this will remain with us as a wonderful memory - I'm only sorry its not local enough to volunteer regularly!
I brought 9 teenagers from our rural church youth group from Newburg, North Dakota to Holy Apostles Church to serve in the soup kitchen in 2017. We are hoping to do it again this year. This was a great experience for these kids and they were glad to have been a part of the amazing work that Holy Apostles church and volunteers do for their community.
The greeters and volunteers are always smiling and friendly, the food is healthy and tasty, the live music is relaxing, and there's always buttered bread or a snack for the road.
A wonderful organization, doing tremendous good. We brought five college students from rural Vermont to NYC for a week to learn about food systems, and this was a highlight of the trip. The staff and other volunteers were all super organized and friendly. An amazing experience.
Our Church Choir and other members came to New York to perform at Carnegie Hall in June 2017. 10 of us who were not performing that day volunteered to help feed at the Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen. We were all given different duties and it was a great experience and a blessing to us to see the hungry and homeless eating a good meal and enjoying their time there. Serving is what Christ has called us all to and we thank the Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen for giving us the opportunity to do so.
May the Lord bless you and always provide as you continue to serve Him there.

It was a great experience for us. Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen was very organized and made the work enjoyable. It's so nice to be a part of something that helps others in so many ways. It made me realize, more so, how I would like to do more healing and giving work in the future. Thanks for having us and being so hospitable!
I volunteered at Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen for the first time. Everybody was very friendly and positive. People really appreciated food and volunteers help. It was such a great experience. I definitely will be back.
There is no greater non profit than Holy Apostle. They have been walking the walk for decades. It serves its community not only with food for the body, but with food for the soul as well. They offer all kinds of services for their guests; from writing workshops to toiletries to health sevices, and so much more. Besides which they make it super easy to volunteer, with an interactive online sign up. I am always so honored and proud to be able to say I am part of this organization.
A fantastic and deserving non profit. Thoughtful to both volunteers and guests alike. It is an honor to be able to volunteer there. They make it so easy to be part of their organization, with easy on the spot sign up. I appreciate the care they give to providing their guests, not just food but healthy food. They run many programs to provide food for the body and soul. Proud to be part of this dedicated group.
I volunteered at Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen for the first time. Everybody was very friendly and positive. People really appreciated food and volunteers help. It was a great experience. I definitely will be back there.
Today was my first time at a soup kitchen and I found HASK to be a very friendly and organized program. Everything from introduction to new volunteers, assigning tasks, and the service itself was done in a very neat and orderly fashion. The staff was extremely kind in acknowledging all the volunteers and the guests. My time there felt very rewarding and I definitely look forward to going back there!
We took out youth group for their first mission trip to help out at the soup kitchen of HASK. the staff there was encouraging and helpful, running a very well organized program. Everyone was very polite and the experience left both the youth and the chaperones that accompanied them desiring to help more. There are already plan to come back again in the near future as a result of the positive experience at HASK.
Great experience at HASK this week. I've been bringing my work teammates to HASK for over 5 years and have come with three different companies. HASK does a great job - very well organized and clear roles for the volunteers - very appreciative of their efforts. This year we served ~800 meals and got to work with some great regular volunteers. The whole operation is classy & well run. I hope our experience at HASK sparks some of my employees to continue volunteering and giving back in their communities.
For eight years I have brought a group of ninth graders from several high schools in Manhattan to a soup kitchen or food pantry during the month of April to volunteer their services. Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen has been the best experience thus far. The staff were so friendly and helpful when we arrived. Throughout the late morning and early afternoon, the guests were welcomed warmly by the staff and volunteers. From the serving line to the bussing of trays, every aspect of this "soup kitchen" was managed professionally. A professional staff in a dining hall at a college could not have done a better job. Throughout the day, the staff, the longstanding volunteers, and the guests all engaged us in friendly conversations. I haven't heard "God bless you" as many times in a decade as I heard in four hours at Holy Apostles. On our way back to school, all of the students echoed my feelings about this experience. If you want to help an organization that knows what it is doing and really cares about the people it serves, Holy Apostles should be high on your list for volunteering and monetary assistance.
I went with my advisory to serve and it was an enriching experience for all! We were warmly welcomed and all activities were well coordinated. There was not a wasted second. All the time was spent meaningfully supporting the wonderful servants at Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen serve more effectively. We would all go again!
Thanks for finding a place for our hands :)
I volunteered at Holy Apostles for the first time today and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Everything was well organized and the coordinators were really welcoming and friendly. I felt thankful being there and I also received a lot of appreciation from everyone else.
I spent this morning with 10 of my colleagues helping at the Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen for the first time. They were friendly, patient, and everyone was given a job and supported throughout the morning. Highly recommend as a well-organized way to give back!
Not only does Holy Apostles Soup kitchen provide food and drink to our guests, they also provide clothing, medical services through non-profit providers, housing referral, health supplies, IDs, referral services and the computer training necessary to get people into jobs and out of a cycle of dependency. I have been a volunteer there for 13 years.
Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen is not merely a great non-profit charity because it provides nutritious meals 5 days a week to individuals without question, but also because provides it's guests with the tools they need to become self-sufficient and break out of a pattern of dependance. They provide the tools and skills needed for individuals to go on interviews to find jobs. They offer computer skills and writing classes, clothing, hair cut vouchers, toiletries and housing, veterans and medical services and assistance and counseling by caring social workers. The services offered help individuals regain their self-esteem and value, an invaluable component for their future success.
I volunteer here once a week. I choose Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen above others because it is well-organized, serves nutritious meals, has various services available on-site, and workshops. I also enjoy volunteering here because I enjoy working with the other volunteers and staff.
As I walked in the doors, I had butterflies in my stomach but Rich put me right to work and when my shift came to a close I felt so energized! - Maddy, Volunteer
A fantastic, welcoming place. A much needed oasis for all those in need to fibd a warm meal and a warm smile in the middle of the city
I've volunteered twice with Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen. Everyone involved is kind and considerate. They are very, very organized. Great way for groups to participate. I highly recommend this organization.
Holy Apostles is a wonderful organization and does great work in the community. It was very organized and gave very clear volunteer duties and tasks. We were happy to help and would recommend it to anyone!
It was great volunteering at the Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen yesterday. Our whole team had a great time and it was wonderful to see the difference they are making in the community. The volunteers and staff there were also very inspiring.
Our company volunteered at HASK. We were so impressed by this organization! They ran an incredibly buttoned up operation, very organized! They offer wonderful services to their patrons as well as a comforting environment. One staff member is nicer than the next, they were all very welcoming and patient with us. We would love to continue to support this organization, and hope to have the chance to volunteer again soon.
Illness precludes me from doing physical tasks. It does not stop me from getting people to smile, talk, and feel better about themselves if only for a short time. Greeting people at the doors and entrances is a blessing and I enjoy it, and them. The palpable karma of the Holy Apostles experience is rejuvenating. I recommend it to anyone who needs a spiritual kick in the pants!

The management of the volunteers is so efficient and well thought out that the whole time you're at the soup kitchen, you feel like you're helping the cause. Plus the volunteer regulars make everyone, guests and newbies, feel at home and welcome. HASK is Aces!!
The work at Holy Apostles to feed the homeless and the needy in an environment of respect and caring is outstanding.
Love volunteering at holy apostles! Warm hearts, good meals and great programs for their guests. Human kindness at its best!
My volunteer time at the soup kitchen was wonderful and very humbling. They have a great staff and impressive system - they don't play games, they are there to feed people. It was great to see the connections people made with those they were serving, many of the volunteers do 2 and 3 days of volunteering during the week and they take it very seriously. Those who were there for a meal were very gracious and thankful, there were many characters in the crowd who brought smiles and laughter. If you get a chance to volunteer here DO IT, you will not be sorry!
