I truly do not have any idea what our family would have done to survive the worst few months of our lives together. My husband has two fingers cut off and required surgery and intense follow up to try and save some of the tissue/fingers, two weeks before I gave birth to our fourth and final baby. I had major complications during delivery and ended up in the hospital for a week after having our baby. Then after I went home in the following weeks I ended up with appendicitis and two other birth related complications which resulted in my having an emergency surgery. And now a month later I had to have a second emergency surgery for yet another issue. It has been so hard both emotionally and physically.

My husband is a wounded warrior and I am normally his caregiver. However with him injured and my not recovering we have needed a lot of extra help. This is where Wounded Warrior Family Support comes in. They are the only organization that will help military/veteran families when a spouse is hurt or in need. Most organizations are there to help when the veteran has surgeries or issues. Which is a great service, but they do not offer assistance in any way if the spouse of the veteran is hurt, injured or incredibly ill and requiring emergency surgery. In our case with my being his caregiver and being in and out of the hospital, that created a huge stressor on both him and I. Wounded Warrior Family Support called immediately once they knew about our situations and offered to send a mothers helper or cleaning service to our house to help with the housework that I have not be physically able to attend to while I have been so sick. They have also helped cover childcare for my younger children so I could get to doctor appointments for myself that I would have otherwise had to miss. With Covid going on I can not bring my younger children to any appointments which means if I can't find childcare then I can't go to these much needed appointments. This service alone is absolutely incredible and fills such a large void. After talking to me one day during my recovery and hearing how awful things were going they also sent a special gift of a prayer shawl and a check that helped us tremendously with being able to purchase prepackaged dinners since I was not able to stand long enough to cook as well as some baby items like having diapers delivered and a grocery order delivered. I can not thank WWFS enough for not only the great amount of help they have provided to our family but also because their employees truly care about each and every family in their program. I received weekly phone calls checking in and also giving me emotional support during this very trying time. By far this is one of the top non-profits I have ever seen.

My husband is a wounded warrior. One day when our 2nd child was only 2 months old I broke my leg and had to have surgery to repair it. Due to the lay out of our house with all the stairs as well as not being allowed to bare any weight for 8-10 weeks; I was not able to cook, clean, couldn't even get ice for my leg or milk for our baby. My husband was working full time and not able to be at home for my entire recovery. He used all his vacation time and sick leave for when our son was born and for the first few days of my injury.

My husband reached out to every person and veteran/wounded warrior group in hopes of finding anyone that might be able to help us. We were turned away because I (just the spouse) was injured. We were told over and over again that if he would have been the one to get hurt then there were all kinds of people lining up to help. One of my friends whom happened to be another spouse of a wounded warrior told me to reach out to Wounded Warrior Family Support.

At first I said no, because I thought they were connected to WWP and they had already turned us away and then refused to answer other veterans calls on our behalf. Then I realized WWFS was entirely different.

I was in tears explaining our situation again and still remember how hopeless I was because I was hurt and not able to take care of my normal duties but also because it was causing my husband a huge stress not being able to help. They immediately got in touch with a home caregiver agency and sent people out to help with taking me to my follow up doctors appointments, cooking, cleaning, getting ice for my leg, make sure our children were fed and allowing me to take the medicine and breaks I needed so I could recover.

I honestly do not know what we would have done without them! They called us weekly to follow up and make sure everything was going well.

But it didn't stop there. They would call up and ask how things were going and if we had a specific stress...like my not being able to attend doctors visits at the VA with my husband, so they paid for daycare for our children so I could be there for my husband on those days. These are just a few small examples of how much WWFS has been there for our family over the last few years. You can actually hear just how much all of the staff at WWFS love their jobs and the veterans and their families they are in contact with. I simply can not say Thank You enough to everyone at Wounded Warrior Family Support!!
