Review for Hope For Kajiado Corporation, Charlotte, NC, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I spent a week at Kajiado Children’s Home on a mission trip with Cook’s Memorial Presbyterian Church. We painted the guest house, interacted with the staff and children on a daily basis: on the playground, at meal times, for programs after the evening meal, working with students on school projects, worshipping with them and simply talking with them person to person. When I was there, the preschool was just getting started. Since then, an elementary program has begun. There was a garden in its early stages and the beginnings of a chicken flock to provide eggs. There was one cow and the hope for more to be able to have fresh milk for them.

Part of the time we were there we surveyed the area to have a deep well dug to supply fresh water for the home, the garden, a hospital for handicapped children, a nearby development of homes built by apprentices from the children’s home and then a supply to be available for sale to people in the community. That well was completed a year or two after I was there and paid for. It has been quite an asset for the home and the community.

During my stay, we met some of the students who were helped by the home who had gone on to complete college and graduate work. Those students came back to the home to help and to inspire the children to have goals, to study well and to work hard in all of their endeavors. One of the great qualities instilled in the children is to take pride in doing mundane chores well. All of the children have chores to do. I observed them helping each other and being thankful for the opportunities this home presented to them.

The board of directors and the volunteers who visit the home and provide support for the staff and children do so at their own expense. Their enthusiasm for the children and staff is contagious! Hope for Kajiado does indeed provide hope and help for children who have been left homeless and orphaned. Lives are being saved physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually!

Thank you for your time to read this. I humbly request that you join us to pray for the ongoing work and accomplishments of Kajiado Children’s Home and those who are and will be inspired to help it grow and endure.

I have witnessed the Kajiado Childrens Home in action. The staff is dedicated to helping each child achieve all she or he can possibly do. The board of directors are all volunteers who love the children and support the staff, making tough decisions when the staff does not fulfill their responsibilities. The money donated to this organization is spent 100% for the children, the staff and the development and upkeep of the facilities. This is truly a ministry that demonstrates the love, grace and mercy of Christ Jesus giving hope to children who have lost their parents and other relatives to AIDS and other diseases that impact the Maasai Tribe in Kenya.

I had the privilege of spending a week at Kajiado Children's Home in 2011. Our team helped distribute needed school supplies to the students, interacted with the students and staff for meals, games and worship, did some needed repair work on the property and investigated the installation of a deep well to service the home, school, a hospital and the community at large with clean water. A year later our congregation helped to raise the funds needed to build that well!

While at the home, I was impressed by the indomitable spirit of the children who had been orphaned by HIV infections that took the lives of their parents. I marveled at the disciplined behavior of the older youth and how they cared for the younger children. There was a dedication to school work and helping each other succeed. Teamwork was paramount as the students took turns serving food, clearing tables, sweeping the floor and other chores that needed to be accomplished each meal. Before breakfast each day, these students were responsible for doing their own laundry, hanging it out to dry and being ready to eat before walking to school.

The Sunday we were there, the atmosphere for worship was electric! The students sang and danced to honor praise, honor and thank God for the blessings of life. All of the songs were led by the students themselves! Their joy was infectious! When it came time for the reading of God's Word and the interpretation of that Word, the students were attentive and quite responsive to the message. They were also pleased that the preacher for that day did not keep them for the usual two to three hours but got his point across in about 30 minutes! That gave them more time to celebrate with song and dance!

Those who support this home as a board of directors are all volunteers. Donations and sponsorships for the children come from individuals and families who live all over the United States and in several foreign countries. I met young adults in college or doing graduate work who grew up at KCH. Though they now live, study and work elsewhere, they make a point of returning to the home to encourage the children and staff who are there and to give back to that community. What a great witness they are to the ongoing work and ministry of this place called Kajiado Children's Home.

Kajiado Children's Home in Kajiado, Kenya is one of the best non-profit organizations I know! The home was begun to care for orphans of the Maasai peoples of Kenya whose relatives died from the AIDS epidemic. I have seen, first hand, how these children have thrived at this home. Each child has chores to do to help them feel part do the community and needed. They also learn responsible behavior to help them the rest of their lives. The older children help with the younger ones among are dedicated to their school work and encourage one another to do their best. They find inspiration for living life to the fullest in their faith in Jesus as their Savior and Lord which they love to express through song and dance. The support for the home and these children comes mainly from individuals who commit to send funds on a monthly basis for clothing, schooling, food and other essentials the children need, as well as items to help them feel loved. The vision the founders had for this home has become reality and grown beyond anything they had hoped. May God continue to bless the work that is being accomplished there through so many volunteers who have felt called to this ministry of hope, care and love!
